I have a Nikon D80 with the Nikkor 18-200 DX VR lens. It has stopped auto-focussing and the shutter release button sometimes fails to operate the shutter. When I press the button I can hear a whirring in the VR lens when the VR function is ''on'' but no sound at all when VR is not selected. Autofocus (M/A) is selected on the lens and AF is selected on the camera. All the contacts on the lens seem to be in good condition. I have tried all autofocus settings on the camera (S, C and A). I have reset the camera using the reset function in the menu. I have fully charged the battery. It still does not work. This camera and lens has had very little use
Fix your issue with these steps:
1. Try forcing the lens to rotate a fraction of a inch. This will sometimes help the problem. Or simply move the switch from M to A on the lens.
2. Try to switching to a single of the 11 auto focus points. Then try if there are specific points that are the problem.
3. If all auto focus points are fine, try updating the firmware or cleaning the sensors inside the camera behind the mirror. If a one or more points are out of order, also try cleaning the sensors behind the mirror.
4. Detatch the lens from the camera, by applying pressure on the release button and twisting the lens so it can be released. See picture
5. Set the camera selection wheel to manual (M), see picture
6. Turn the camera on, and start the liveView format. This will flip op the mirror inside the camera.
7. Take a dry can blower. Or if in lack, use an empty plastic bottle, without moisture inside, and use it to blow on the autofocus sensors.
They are located at the bottom under the mirror. NOTE Do not blow with your mouth, small amount of moisture will hit the CCD also located here.
8. Turn the camera off
9. Reattach the lens. Push the lens, white point to white point and turn the lens in place.
10. This worked for me, hope it also helped you ;)

I just encountered the same problem. The advice giver who forced the focus ring with autofocus engaged was right on the mark. (Thanks!) Actually, I didn't need to force it, just gave it a firm push. Voila!

Check that the electrical contacts on the lens and camera body are clean, and that the lens is mounted fully and correctly to the camera, i.e. no damage or dirt in the mounts. If these are all okay, it is looking like an internal problem with the lens's focus motor, or possibly something jammed in the lens.
If possible, try the lens on another camera body. Alternatively, you could switch the camera to a manual focus mode (or a mode that
doesn't require focus confirmation) and see if you can take a picture.
This pretty much rules out what you can do for yourself I'm afraid. If you still have no luck, you will probably need to take it to a camera store for inspection / repair.
(Incidentally, the R09 is not actually an error message. It means that
you have 9 shot capacity in the
camera buffer before it will fill up. It sounds as if the camera is set
to an auto-focus mode that requires focus confirmation before the
shutter will fire which is why you're seeing the message.)
Matt.

Try removing the lens and then reloading it. Hope this works.
SOURCE: nikkor 70-300 lens wont autofocus on d60.. HELP!!!
There is a known defect in some of the Nikkor lens' that were manufactured during a certain time period. The same thing happened to my lens.. it stopped autofocusing for no reason at all. (It was purchased in May 08). I shipped it to Nikon and I received a new lens within 10 days of shipment. You have a 3 year warranty on the camera and the lens'. Nikon has AMAZING customer support when it comes to legitimate issues.
Go to the web site. Fill out a repair order and send the lens to them exactly as stated in the instructions. You will have a new lens within 2 weeks.
