It happened all at once. I started the dishwasher the other nite, heard the click under the DW (normal), then a pump or something in the main motor, masher, source of washing water starts with a low hummmm which slowly turns into a louder grinding. I'm not wondering if the water inlet valve hasn't failed and the sound is because the pump is not getting water? This is a 5 year old KitchenAid KUDS0FLSS1 unit. The main pump/washer was replaced under warranty near the end of year 1. We have well water that is softened, but we still have high calcium and rust

I had a similar problem with a KUDM25SHWH1 dishwasher. Rubber seal looked fine. I found an incredible tip on another fixi it site. One possible problem iss the pump cover screws may have worked loose and is squirting water directly on the door seal. Man that was it! I saw a couple of looses screws and a small portion of the pump cover gasket showing. I loosened the pump top, reset the gasket tightened it all down...no leaks! The pump I refer to is located directly below the spray arm inside the washer. Easy to get to. Another tip was to look for a split sspray arrm that may spray water directly into the door seal.

SOURCE: KitchenAid KUDP01DLWH6 dishwasher filter clog
Follow the main water supply line. It goes to a solenoid valve which is normally located front left side under the dishwasher.
1. Turn off the main circuit breaker for the dishwasher.
2. Turn off Water supply to the dishwasher.
3. Remove lower front panel.
4. Remove Water supply line from solenoid.
5. remover wire connections from solenoid.
6. Remove 2 mounting screws from solenoid.
7. Take solenoid valve out.
8. Look inside the valve where the water supply line was connect to, You will be able to see the filter. it is just a screen and you can easily clean it.
Good Luck
SOURCE: KitchenAid dishwasher allows water to drain while washing
Your dishwasher is siphoning the water out. The drain hose should turn upward, nearly to the bottom side of the counter top, before it attaches to the drain or disposal. If it has an independant drain it still needs the rise and also needs an air break to stop the siphoning.
SOURCE: Kitchenaid Dishwasher makes jack hammer sound when filling
Check the power to the valve actuator with a meter. If the power is not fluctuation (causing the valve to open and close quickly) then the problem is likely "water hammer" in the piping leading to the DW. Water hammer occurs when a fast flow of water turns a corner in the piping. The solution is too find where the pipe is vibrating and add support. Another way to eliminate water hammer is to install a shock tube on the pipe. It is filled with air and acts as a shock absorber when the water hammers. They are available at Home Depot, Lowes, plumbing supply places, etc. Another way to make a shock absorber is to install a tee in a horizontal part of the pipe with an 18 inch+ piece of pipe installed vertically and capped at the top. Air gets trapped in the vertical pipe and cushions the vibration. You might be able to do this in the space behind the DW before the pipe connects to the DW. The shock tube is smaller and does not have to be vertical so if space is an issue that may be the way to go.
