Maytag Washer Washer will fill but will not spin. Buzz on spin setting sounds like motor or switch malfunction. Belt is fine.

Almost certainly with that sound, the motor start capacitor has failed. It will be located either behind the control panel, or underneath next to the motor.

The belt is still attached to the transmission right?? It sounds like the brakes may be stuck. Or are both belts off and the motor still trips out?

Look under the washer. Is there a little pile of black rubber shavings? This sounds like the basket coupler between the motor and the drum. If the coupler is the problem it is inexpensive to fix. Some also call this part the "clutch". It kind of looks like a hockey puck with six holes in it... three for the motor, three for the clothes drum. In your case, I suspect that the holes are intact in the direction of spin, but as soon as it reverses for agitation, it breaks out through the back of the holes.

Does it not spin just in the final cycle or not at all during the wash cycle? Also, does the wash cycle agitate normal?

I just repaired this exact model this weekend. If the machine will drain but doesn't agitate or spin (you have to put a screwdriver in the lid switch to see), it's usually a loose belt. This time I replaced the belt, but it still would not agitate or spin, and the motor was not turning, just a "buzz, buzz, buzz" when the washer attempted to supply power to the motor. The start capacitor for the motor was bad. Part number 3429938 which runs about $60. Not hard to access once you tip the washer over slightly, just DISCHARGE THE OLD CAPACITOR so you don't get a nasty shock.

it does sound like a bad motor.
they are rather expensive on that machine,
you would be looking at 300 or so

Does the motor start and run for agitation with the belt connected?

the transmission needs to be replaced

sounds like the drive belt is broken these models have pump belt and a drive belt

The washer is equipped with a lid switch failure detector. If the lid switch
should malfunction, the detector will stop operations for your safety.

Read below

First,turn the control dial to proper cycle and pull dial out to start the washer. If
equipped with buttons, be sure they are fully depressed.
Close lid and pull dial out to start the washer. For your safety, washer will
not agitate or spin unless the lid is closed.
The washer is equipped with a lid switch failure detector. If the lid switch
should malfunction, the detector will stop operations for your safety. Call for
service.
Pauses are normal. Wait and see if the washer will start again.
