    ok i have the same problem with my 6400. i tried the battery trick. NO GOOD. i tried shorting the polarity trick. NO GOOD. all i need to know is the location of that eprom chip and its markings. thanks

If you are the rightful owner dell will help you reset this.
but it will take some time.
or
you will have to remove the cmos battery (looks like a coin) under the keyboard and main battery
wait a few mins and try again.
if that does not work then only some techs knows what chip to short to clear.
like me.

Bios password for dell inspirion 6400

remove the laptop (large battery) then: remove the bios battery (small) from the motherboard wait ten minutes pluf in the laptop reboot then shutdown and reinsert the laptop battery. your code will be erased
