Question about Amana SCRATCH&DENT 25 Cu. Ft. French Doors Refrigerator (BLACK COLOR) AFD2535DEB

1 Answer

No Cols - Temperature Controls do not respond - LED display shows a dash "-"

Our 4 year old Amana appears to have the same problem.
The refrigerator and freezer section stopped cooling and the inside
temperature reached 60 degrees by the time we found out refrigerator
had stopped working.

There was no power failure!

The refrigerator was on, the lights all worked, the LED display was not
showing numbers. The display showed just a dash on each setting.
Also, trying to change the settings did not work. The controls did nothing.
They displays both kept showing a dash. The pump was not coming on.

We lost lots of food.

I unplugged the refrigerator and plugged it back in. The refrigerator
then showed numbers, the pump started, and the controls worked
again. It's like I rebooted the refrigerator's computer. The refrigerator
got cold again, The freezer was back to working.

BUT, is my refrigerator reliable?

I have scheduled a visit from the Amana repair center. We'll see what they have to say.

....

After scheduling a vist through Amana's 800 number for Saturday
morning on Friday night, I get a call on Saturday.
They say we don't do work on Saturday. Now isn't that great service?

Fantastic! Just knowing this has been seen before is
a very good to know! I'll get the surge protector.
Other electronic gear. microwave, PC, digital clocks, phone,
answering machines all go out badly during the slightest outage,
so I know there was no outage.

I was also told an adaptive defrost controller may have gone
    flakey.

Is there a diagnostic test or tests that can re run on this
stuff to check out overall sanity? Measurements?

If there are circuit card revisions that may fix problems, would
that be something that can be inquired about?

Again another great idea! The Amana model number is AFD2535DEB. It's the French Door model with the freezer
    on the bottom.

    You have been very helpful!

Same exact problem - lights, dashes, no cooling - on a ABB2224DEQ bottom freezer. No solution yet

Pencj,
My honest answer is that I have seen this before and in most cases the board works properly after the reboot.
Although you may not have lost power, you may have gotten a voltage spike. I would cancel the service man coming out, (I am a working service man myself) he probably will give you two options. #1 Wait to see if this happens again and if it does happen again soon, the board should be replaced. #2 replace the board now.
My suggestion is to soon go purchase a surge suppressor to plug into. This does not need to be a power strip style. A good quality suppressor that only has one or 2 plug in's or plugs directly into the wall receptacle should do fine. Your refrigerators maximum amp draw is listed on the model # sticker inside the refrigerator compartment.
I hope this helps, supertechks

    Pencj,

Manufacturers are constantly making updates to their circuit boards. There is no test for your type problem, only time. At this time I do not see enough value in replacing your control board. Watch it close for the next month or so. If you check it in the morning and in the evening and see dashes in the display again, reboot then replace board as soon as possible. The adaptive defrost is built into the main board. I would blame the main board before I blamed the adaptive defrost part of the main board. Always put your model in post. There are differences in models that are sometimes unique to only one or a few models, sometimes problems apply to all models. This will help someone help you.

    pencj,

Thanks, I only check this site when I get a email notification of activity by someone I have answered a question for or when I get notification someone specifically ask a question of me. I don't participate in the fixya system for pay, I may some day. I enjoy the pat on the back when I do good.

I have done this over 30 years for a living.

    Thanks again, supertechks

Hello, We have a Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer

I don't know about Whirlpool refrigerator freezers, but my Amana has a temperature control in the freezer that regulates the overall cooling, and then the control in the refrigerator compartment controls how much of the total cooling is sent to the refrigerator section. My advice would be to lower the temperature setting of the freezer, and see if the temperature lowers in the refrigerator as well. Also, you can go to the Whirlpool website and they can help you further.

Iceream is not freezing

The temperature is not set to high cooling.First check the temperature setting. But if temperature is set right and still the ice cream is not cooling then .Problem relates to weak compressor. ------------- The problem is weak compressor. The refrigerant ( R12) in the compressor is got low.The compressor is weak. The compressor needs to be replaced.-------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.------------ But as you mentioned that ice cream is not freezing, so that means freezer is not freezing to its required temperature.------- This indicates problem with compressor. When compressor cools the freezer section then fridge section gets cold.If freezer section is not getting properly cold then fridge section will not cool properly/.So the problem relates to compressor.---------- In the compressor there is a refrigerant called FREON.With the help of this Freon the compressor cools the freezer section.Freon is a gaseous type cooling agent. The compressor will stop cooling when coolant gets leaked from its chamber.--------- Again recharging the Freon is possible, but the cost for that recharging is approx the cost of new compressor. So its always advisable to get compressor replaced.Because new compressor has warranty for few years.------------------ You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

I have an Amana ARB2217C bottom freezer with working lights, fan, and freezer. But the refrigerator doesn't seem to want to cool. I think it stopped a couple of days ago.I've turned the thermostat from...

The problem has to be in the damper control inside the refrigerator section.

Disconnect the refrigerator from power and remove the food from the top shelf. The damper control is in the box near the top of the refrigerator section behind the temperature control knob.

Remove the knob and cover until you can access the damper control. You can prop the damper control open with a pencil or something to make the refrigerator work until you get a part if you need to. Here is the part you need.

Your refrigerator probably has an issue with its "damper control assembly", which regulates cold air coming from the freezer compartment. Contact an appliance service company.

Amana freezer is cold, fridge is not.

You will be able to hear it when you open the freezer door and hold the door switch in.It is located behind the rear panel inside the freezer. The fan should be running when the compressor is running. If it is running make sure the damper(vent) to the fridge side is not blocked by ice and that the damper door is open.

Amana model SXD25QA3W. Not cooling. Compressor runs.

Low on refrigerant which is R 12. EPA has stopped the manufacture of it and it is priced out of sight.
You have a leak and will need it fixed. Compressor is about $300-400 list. You don't want to go there.
Good luck but likely 15-17 years old....... New one ???

Refrigerator compartment not cooling

If you are sure the fan in the freezer is running and you don't feel any air flow out of the top middle vent inside the fridge section, then the damper motor must be bad. The damper motor is behind that vent cover inside the fridge section.
