If the screen becomes dark, the color looks unusual, or the LAMP indicator on the front of the TV flashes, it is time to replace the lamp with a new one (not supplied).

Use only a replacement Sony XL-2100U or XL-2100 for your TV. Use of any other lamp may damage your LCD projection TV. Contact your Sony dealer for a replacement lamp.

Note: Before replacing the lamp, turn the power off on the main unit. Wait several minutes, then unplug the power cord. (The cooling fan will continue to blow for about two minutes after turning the power off.)

Be sure to allow the lamp to cool down completely before removing it. The surface of the lamp remains extremely hot for at least 30 minutes after the power has been turned off.

by pops? do you mean it explode? how many lamps? it could be the fan that supposed to be ventilating the lamp or it could be the the ballast, why the ballast because the ballast regulates the voltage in order the keep the lamp on, for ignition it sends around 15,000 volts after that it regulates the votage to a small amount of voltage around 5,000 so it could be sending the big amount of voltage all the time never regulates that or it could be regulating and then sending another big amount of voltage over and over until the lamp doesnt handle those changes.

Refer to your owners manual on lamp replacement. Remove the old lamp and look at it. If it looks "blown" (like a flashbulb) then it is defenitely defective.

It is symptom of weak Lamp (bulb) that requires replacement.
You can buy Sony original lamp from Sony Accessories Store.
