How do I scan a document to my comp - I have absolutely no idea...
I have tried turning it on then pressing scan - doesn't work.
Tried pressing Scan when printer off - doesn't work.
Tried finding the printer program on my computer to see if theres a scanning option - can't find it.
It works fine as a printer or copier.
I am using Windows Vista.
I have a Vista system and an old hp 1315. the CD driver that came with it includes some very useful software that cannot be installed in my laptop. according to the hp website, that's because Vista comes with a compatible software for my hardware. checking Windows Help & Support gave me this solution:
Open to Windows Photo Gallery, click File then click Import from Camera or Scanner.
i did exactly that and it worked!

I ran into this problem myself. The scan button does not work on my printer. I chatted with a HP technician about it. He gave me some solutions to this problem. There are two ways to scan a document.
Way # 1----Click on the following in this order:
1. Windows
2. All Programs
3. Accessories
4. Paint
5. File Menu
6. From Scanner or Camera
7. Scan
Way # 2----Click on the following in this order:
1. Windows
2. All Programs
3. HP
4. HP Solution Center
5. Scan Picture
6. Select File type from file type drop down arrow
7. Scan
8. OK
Both of these worked for me. I was able to rotate the scanned picture in Paint. I hope that this helps you resolve your issue.

Have you installed the printer software from the CD?
There is a program called HP DIRECTOR on the CD. Or you can download it from HP.
Once installed, an icon will show up on the desktop (HP DIRECTOR).
Open it and use the scan option. It will scan any photo or document into your computer for you.

Go to hp's site, search drivers/software for the free download. Select your operating system, then download. It contains all of the bells and whistles from the original CD that came with the machine.

You need to download drivers for this unit to work with Vista google it

If you go to www.hp.com
Do a search on your printer.
Look for an option for drivers and downloads.
Select your printer and windows vista.
You need to find the print, scan, fax drivers. Not just the printer drivers.
The driver download would be like 800 MegaBytes instead of like 2 or 3 MegaBytes.

open HP director
click SCAN DOCUMENT
set scan for editable text YES
set original contains graphics NO if it doesn't, YES if it does (no results in smaller file)
if you want to create a PDF file, leave SCAN TO set to SAVE TO FILE
if you want to create a word document, change SCAN TO to MICROSOFT WORD
click SCAN
click ACCEPT (bottom right)
tell it NO if you're done, YES if you want to scan something else
If you scan more than one thing all of your scans will end up in a single multi-page file
rename & save file to permanent location as you would normally.
