Laptop won't boot. HDD does not spin

I have a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 120GB HDD on my HP Compaq nx9000 running XP SP3. Everything was OK until I interrupted a 'restart' by shutting down the computer with the power switch. All it does now is count up the RAM bytes and freeze. F2 for setup achieves nothing, so I cannot get into BIOS. If I disconnect the drive and switch on the laptop, it reports a failed previous boot and a locked drive (even though the HDD won't be connected). When I slave it onto another machine it does not spin, but makes a series of squawking sounds. Can anybody help?

Sometimes, recent hardwares (laptop components) don't have its drivers for XP1 & 2. (It conflicts.)
Try with XP3. Otherwise, you have to reinstall win7 and run win XP virtually under win7.

Slave is ok but master freezes...

you can install even if it is a slave disk. also you can try setting the jumpers to master mode, check the sides of the hdd, it has a jumper setting and set it to master, using the shorting pin, just plug it out and connect it to the right setting

Compaq presario v5000

Boot into Setup and run the TOOLS / PRIMARY HDD TEST / SHORT TEST.

If it fails, try another HDD.

If OK, verify Boot Order is Floppy, CD-ROM, HDD. Exit Setup.

Print Table 1 Low Level Format instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/106419

Boot with a DOS disk that contains Debug. Run the Table 1 script. Turn V5000 Off.

Boot with the HP Operating System CD. XP install should now proceed normally.

Good luck.
