Question about HP OfficeJet Pro k550 Printer

K550 printer not printing Black

I've got a like new HP K550 printer that will not print black. The other color cartridge or this print fine. This is the second time this has happened on this printer. I have run all the utilities that come with it with no results. The first time this happened I replaced the cartridge even though it was still full. This time that doesn't seem to help, I have also replaced the cartridge head.

    Same problem... it was working fine a month ago, now it prints all colors except black. I have cleaned everything, replaced ink cartridge. I refuse to buy printhead for $50, think I will just buy new printer. I can now print a streaked page, if any one knows of a use for one on which every second or third line prints. This printer has less than $10,000 copies on it.

    i replaced a black cartridge and bought new hp black cartridge .initially it was running well but after got some black print it stoped producing black text and print only colour text and some black world though my black cartridge is still 75%

    HPK550 prints some black, but is very streaky and has white stripes in places. Printhead has been replaced 3 times. Still very poor quality. All other colors seem fine. Have tried all the tests, cleaning of printheads etc. still very unacceptable printing.

    the cyan is not printing. a report says i have 71% of the ink available... but the print quality diagnostics page shows everything cyan as BLANK and everything else ok. HP have replaced printer- still experiencing issue. HAve uninstalled & reinstalled drivers & software. still not working, need a patch?

    I too have a K550 printer that doesn't print black ink. Color is great. New HP cartridige installed, went thru all the utilities and proceedures, still nothing. From a local HP authorized repair dealer I was told no one repairs ink jets in town because of a lack of parts. You might have some luck if still in warranty and send entire printer to HP.

Hi there is a simple solution to your problem take out the print head place just the jets( where the ink comes out) in warm water for a few seconds while it is in the water use a syringe over each breathe hole at the top of the print head (one at a time) and lightly push air into the head. this process clears any ink clog and frees up the print head and allows it to print propely

I had the exact same problem. The PC helpdesk disconnected me atleast several times claiming my warranty was expired; Eventually I 'installed' the printer on my cousin's iBook and got a replacement printhead (under the still valid and registered warranty) and an important firmware fix:

  • Some versions of the firmware damage the printhead!
    (But only the black/yellow)
The issue is that the black ink dries faster than the yellow, but is not handled correctly. The first version of the firmware didn't make that distinction and failed to clean 'dried' black ink, causing a the head to clog, cake then break permantly. Early versions cleaned excessively grinding the the print printhead leading to leaking in a permant break. And the version I downloaded in 2006 uses too much black when printing but this is (software correctable).

After updating the firmware and I noted that it seems to have changed the cleaning behaviour of the printer, taking a minute rather than grinding for half-an-hour. And the response time for printing is generally a few seconds. But the annoying tendancy to 'lose' ink persists.

One last note:
  • Only update the firmware if you are having an issue with the black/yellow printhead!
    (or one that is preportedly fixed by firmware)
  • HP has declared that firmware updates are descresionary and void the warranty, unless the update is applied at the reccommendation of HP's own staff.
  • Previous HP products are often 'broken' by updates that disable some 'useful' features because different hardware sets are sold as the same model. For example many DiscWriter 3300(s) can't actually write to any discs after a 'critical firmware update' for that problem.

It seems this affliction is reported many times on the internet, new out of the box the black print head is bad.
1st run the cleaning utility on the driver CD.
If it is in warranty call Hp and give them the info.
it is unlikely the print head is clogged or it would print some garbage.
If it is out of warranty. then feel free to take it out and clean and check/reseat the connections to the print head.
The paper handling jams are the next biggest complaint.

New black cartridge, but black print is streaky and lines missing. colours are fine

Go to your printer's maintain page and perform deep cartridge cleaning. the problem will be solved.

Won't print just colour...

you have to check the ink levels in your cartridge. if they ae low then replace the color cartridges.

Some times those have special challenges. Has your cartridge been sitting a while in the box, maybe in a warm spot? Some times even new cartridges dry out a little. Was your old cartridge low or completely gone? Just as a test, if you put it back in your printer does the old cartridge work? Any printer error messages? Can you print a test page or an alignment page for your black cartridge? These might be too many questions but here are some HP support links with some How To information for getting more answers. Streaks / Bands of broken print area

First with a clean soft cloth and a very small amt of alcohol clean off the underside of the printer carridge (the holder for the print heads) also where the print heads cleaning station is clean out any large masses of congealed link. Then remove the ink cartridge in question and with a pencil eraser gently rub the contacts and both the cartridge and the carridge replace the cartridge. Using the software tools for the printer clean and align the printheads ( if there is an option to do so). If this dosn't fix the problem try a different ink cartridge.
