Really it all depends on how you want them to sound, and to be set up. There really is not specific air space, but there are general air spaces that work, and some times the manufacture will list some specs for different set ups. It also depends on the size of the sub, which you did not specify.

Kicker recommends as follows.

0.4 cubs per sub for a compact box, and 1.8 for an SQ box. SQ stand for sound quality.

So if you want a small box, do .4 per sub. If you want a better sounding box do 1.8.

Rule of thumb and something to think about.

The more air space in the sub, the less power you can run, the less air space, the more power you can run.

For example you can run 200 watts RMS per sub at .4 cubes, but only 140 watts RMS with 1.8.

As well, the smaller box will be louder, But not sound as good.

What does more/less airspace mean in terms of sound when talking about a sub-woofer box?

air space behind the cones of a speaker is critical to the performance of the speaker. the space behind has to be air tight. If the specs state a minimum of 1.25 cu ft and a max of 1.75 cu f t that is what you will have to achieve for the performance If you build a box for 1.75 cu ft then when the speakers are fitted you will probably spot on. Go on line for speaker box construction and you will get valuable info. for your project

I have a 2011 gmc sierra and im putting a kicker comp vr 12 in there and i was wondering how much airspace i would need the box im looking @ is .98 i hope its enough airspace and its ported box

For optimal performance there is really only one size for the box .Firstly, you get two different types of subwoofers, an open air, or closed air sub. If it is an open air sub ( hole with mesh in the center of the magnet) no ports are required, and the box should be sealed on the inside with silicone sealant. If it is a closed air sub ( no hole in the magnet) you need a 50mm port about 120mm long. If it is a 12 inch sub the box size will be 13 inches x 13 inches x 13 inches. Hope this helps

I have 2 12 inch kickers and have a solid box in my mustang. would it sound better if it was ported?

Kicker speakers always require very large boxes (you're looking at 12 cubic feet for both), when ported. Ported boxes are very sensitive to box size, port tuning etc, so it's probably best to leave it sealed, as they are far more leniant, and sealed boxes are usually 1/2 size of ported boxes. You would get less bass when ported than with sealed (because ported boxes must be bigger to match the sealed ones).

If you wish to experiment with the bass response of speakers, download winISD, and put your speakers in, see what size boxes give you what.

Box dimensions for 15 in cerwin vega

do you want the box ported or unported (holes or no holes) if you don't got a lot of room than you dont want a ported box. keep in mind the box has to have the correct amount of cubic air space or you could seize your sub... if you're building it make sure you use OSB board (oriented strand board) or MDF board(medium density fiber) your sub needs .7cubic feet of air space in an unported box
