Hot water rinse when cold rinse is selected

Washer will only rinse with hot water no matter the setting. It will wash with cold water so I know the cold side works.

I double checked the hoses. The cold is connected to the C and the hot is connected to the H.

I have the same problem with my Kenmore HE3 (Whirlpool Duet brand). I checked my hoses, and they are hooked up correctly.

I have the same problem with the rinse cycle AND the fill cycle. Even if I chose the Cold/Cold temperature setting, hot water is used. Hoses are hooked up correctly. I have attempted to shut off Hot water through the hose on/off knob, but washer senses no water and errors after a while (as I assumed it would).

  • jsb7962 Feb 06, 2008

I don't think there is anything wrong with me. It's my washer that is the problem. When you tell it to rinse with cold water it decides it knows better and rinses with hot water.

I ranked Master_Tech's FREE response as inappropriate because I indicated that the washer would wash with cold water when selected. I just figured that having the hoses crossed would have prevented that from happening. If I am wrong I apologize, but if my logic is correct then Master_Tech's response was inappropriate given the description of the problem. Sorry Master_Tech I did not mean to insult you. Now that you know the hoses are not crossed, what do you think could be the problem with the washer, not me. :)

We are having the same problem, sometimes. We are running multiple tests to try to narrow the problem, but it's very upsetting.

I am having the same problem - and this is going to cost us a fortune!!
How do I switch the wires? We are not sure if it is filling with
cold..but when the wash cycle is finished - the clothes come out giving
    off steam!!!

ok first master tech answer was not inappropriate its by the book for the problem your describing most of the problems we find in the Field are consumer related we get rid of them and go from there next thing id try is pull the top and switch the wires on the water valves its not hard then let me know what happens has the washers always done this or did this just happen and do you have an ohm meter

Has anyone checked the flow rate of the fill hoses? I read that odd problems come up if they are greater than a certain percentage different from one another.

Relax Master-Tech - probably wasn't meant as a personal put down.

Washer will only wash the clothes in HOT water on both the wash and rinse cycles.the hoses are properly connected. It happens when I select cold, warm or hot.

Definitely check the cold inlet solenoid valve, also check the small filters in the inlet port for foreign matter that could block the water.

I believe the water temp switch is bad. It will start filling on warm then stop if I put it on hot it will fill with cold water. I have cut the hot water off to achieve this but when it reaches rinse it...

it sounds to me that the hoses are connected to the machine incorrectly. Typically if the plumber ran the water lines behind washer correctly the hot pipe is on the left and the cold pipe is on the right sometimes thats backward and be determined by touching hoses while filling on warm setting and see which hose feels hot. On the back of washer they where they connect hot goes on the bottom and cold on top

Cold wash/rinse selected, but only hot water is used

I have a Sears front load washer and I also noticed that on a cold wash/cold rinse cycle the machine was drawing hot water.

Laundry detergents require water to be at a certain temperature to aid in disolve. The machine adds sufficient hot water, regardless of the cycle, until that temp is reached. If I was to use a cold water detergent the machine, because it has no way of knowing which detergent I'm using, will still add hot water until that minimum temp is released. I don't know if there are machines available which include detergent type as an option?

All cycles run cold

Hello
Welcome.

Faulty Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve is the device that meters water from the supply lines into your wash tub. On domestic washers, there are two lines, one hot the other cold. These valves are susceptible to mineral build-up and sediment deposits. There are two common failure modes:

Failure Mode One: Valve will not open.
If you can verify that the solenoid on the valve body is receiving the requisite voltage and the valve will not open, then it is faulty. Since the solenoids operate independently, it is likely that one side of the valve will work and the other will not. This can produce strand results such as a very hot wash when warm is selected (due to no cold water). Or the reverse in that the wash water is cold when warm is selected. If mineral or hard water deposits are a problem, you may witness a substantial increase in the time required for the tub to fill. This is caused be a decrease in the flow ware of the valve.

Failure Mode Two: Valve opens but will not close.
This is verified by a valve that allows water to flow into the tub even though no power is being supplied to the solenoid. This one is usually quickly diagnosed when the machine begins to overflow and the power plug for the washer is disconnected from the wall. However, this will not stop the water from flowing into the machine. The water must be shut off at the wall. As with the previous failure mode, the variant of this failure mode is that it may take the valve a while to completely bridge the flow of water after the power has been removed from the solenoid.

How to Diagnose?
There are a couple of ways to diagnose a faulty valve. However, there is a simple test that one can perform that will usually let you know if the water inlet valve is faulty.

Scenario:
When set to cold wash and rinse, the unit will not fill. When set to warm wash and cold rinse the washer will fill with hot water only and will fail to rinse. This is a common scenario where the cold water side of the valve does not appear to be contributing to the fill, but the hot water side does. This symptom could be easily reversed where cold water is being supplied, but never hot water.

So, how can the problem be determined? It is as simple as switching the wire harness plugs on the hot and cold side. In the example above where the cold water is never being supplied, the symptoms would be the opposite when the wiring harnesses were switched. So the machine would produce only produce cold when warm or hot is selected. No water should be present when you select cold. This verifies that the timer, wiring and switches are all in working order. Assuming this tests checks out, you simply need to replace the water inlet valve.

Recent Customer Symptoms:
I have a Kenmore Washing Machine. My question is if I set the washer on cold was and cold rinse it will not fill with water but if I set it on hot wash and cold rinse it will fill with Hot water and wash normally but when it comes to rinse with cold no water will fill and will go to the spin cycle assuming that it had filled with water. There is water in the cold water source. Any idea??? I was assuming the timer but not to sure.

Maytag washer

It sounds like you have the hot and cold water lines to the washer reversed.  Try turning off the tap for the hot water then setting the washer to just cold wash and then  hot washif you get nothing on the cold and cold water when set to hot they are probably reversed.  Typically if the auto-temp control is broken you will only get hot or cold coming out on any setting.
