When I bought the dryer 18 months ago it came with a 3 wire plug and the green ground was attached seperately (not part of the plug). We just moved and the house has a 4 plug setup. I bought a 4 wire plug and attached the wires as the back of the dryer described( white wire in the middle(the red and black to the other 2 terminals no order, and the fourth wire the green(ground) to the screw on top of the existing self contained green ground. I did not remove the original self contained green ground(it is still connected. I started the dryer and immediately could smell something burning. Can I not use a 4 wire on this brand??

Good day,
You wired it correctly. The original setup you had, used a 3 prong, and the white wire could serve as a ground, since all green wires and white wires connect to the same place on the circuit breaker panel.
Adding an additional green wire from the cabinet to a grounding location, such as a bare cold water pipe is just added safety.
There might be something wrong inside the dryer, but to be safe, you should have the outlet checked, to make sure the white(common wire) didn't lift off ground potential, and you have a true 230 volts from red to black, and 115 from both white to red, and white to black at the outlet.

I need to put a four wire 220 plug on a 3 wire LG DLE5932W dryer

Remove wire from ground screw and move it to center terminal and attach white wire there. Red wire to one outside terminal, black to the other, green goes to the frame (ground) where the first wire came from.

Whirlpool Dryer - Model LHE 5700. My Dryer had a 3 prong plug. I recently built a house which has a 4 prong plug. I changed out the plug and connected the wires according to color. The center wire is white...

Hello David_Teresa,

Under the new Codes...all dryers (and stoves/ovens) must now be 4 wire....having a seperate neutral and ground wire in NEW construction. In decades past, the neutral was allowed to serve as both - the neutral and ground - typically by means of a solid metal strap or wire strap that bonded that connection to the metal frame of the dryer. This sounds as if it is the case in your existing dryer...which was typical.

But...the old arrangement wasn't always reliable...and a seperate dedicated ground provides a greater safety path in the event of a fault inside the dryer (lowering the chance the user may get a shock when touching the frame of the dryer).

To modify your existing 3 prong dryer over to 4....you'll need to remove the 3 wire - disconnect the ground strap (or wire) that bonds the neutral to the frame of the dryer...and install your 4 wire so that you'll have (from left to right) one hot, one neutral, one hot connection...and connect the ground directly to he frame of the dryer (there is usually a green screw near the dryer connection block for this ground)

For more on this - with an illustration, see:

http://www.american-appliance.com/service_pages/electric_dryer_cord.htm

When done properly, you can test for correct wiring and connection with an ohm-meter (continuity check)...by checking for continuity from the ground prong on the plug to the frame of the dryer...you should see continuity. Then check for continuity from the neutral prong on the plug to the frame...you should NOT see continuity....nor should you see any continuity between the neutral connection at the wiring block to the metal frame.

The whole purpose of the Code change to the 4 wire is to seperate the neutral from ground to provide additional safety for the user.
Hope this helps,....

Connection

the green wire will attach to the dryer cabinet. The white wire will attach to the middle and the other two(red& black) will attach to the outside of the terminal block.

Good Luck!!

Wiring 4 wird dryer plug to 3 wire 10/3 for 220 welder

the four wire plug seperates the neutral and ground. the three wire just piggybacks the ground to the neutral. so just get a three wire cord that fits the 220 plug on the generator and install it on your dryer make sure to attach the ground correctly for your three wire setup

REPLACING DRYER 4 PRONG PLUG

This is common issue. Due to some building codes the 3-prong configuration is no longer used in homes. The wiring is similiar with one exception. The 4-wire plug uses an additonal (WHITE) NEUTRAL wire.

Here's a brief explanation of how the plugs are configured:

Dryer 3 prong wire configuration:

RED - 120 VAC
GREEN - GROUND
BLACK - 120 VAC

Dryer 4 prong wire configuration:

RED - 120 VAC
GREEN - GROUND
BLACK - 120 VAC
WHITE - NEUTRAL

BOTH plugs provide the SAME source voltages to your appliance:

220 VAC - provided across the RED and BLACK leads are what drives your heating circuitry.
120 VAC - usually tapped of the BLACK wire is used to run the drive motor and timer on MOST dryers.

The wire terminal block in the back of the dryer should have a black, white, and red wire running to it from the dryer wiring harness. With the 4 prong plug, simply attach the BLACK, WHITE and RED wires at the terminal block ensuring that you match the RED and BLACK wires as they are configured and attach the WHITE wire at the remaining terminal lug. Make sure you screw them all down securely. Attach the remaining GREEN wire to chassis (dryer frame) ground. I hope ths helps you.

Switching the cord on maytag neptune dryer

dre, sounds like you moved and the dryer electrical outlet is only 3 pronged, This tells me that the dryer will be grounded through the neutral leg. Just hook up the cord and you should be fine. Make sure the white is in the center. Catriver.
