I used a car charger to plug in my cobra XRS 9645 and it fried it. Each time i plug a cobra power cord it blows the fuse in it. is there any possible way i can fix it or do i need it professionly reparied. if i need it professionly repaired how much would it be and where do i take it.
Honestly bud, I would buy a new one. The newer models are reasonable. You can call cobra and warantee it, but really ebay will get you a new cobra 9840 for about $60 if you watch the auctions. I have several detectors and have added the xrs9840 and the R7 remote to the collection. I got both for $111, nice deal.. I'm going to use the R7 pointed backwards, and the passport aiming forwards, and have the extra 9840 for whatever..
But I would imagine that a warantee with shipping etc.. It's just not worth it. Meanwhile disassemble the current one, and follow the leads from the power source from the center pin to the first short and see how bad it is. I would imagine you have some blown resistors and capacitors, you may be able to replace them. Otherwise dispose of properly.

I have a Cobra ESD-9117 that wouldn't turn on. There was power at the plug end. I took it apart and took the power/volume button off. I used a magnifying glass and found the contact for the power must have bent from all the years of use. I bent it back and all is good again.
Did you first check the fuse in the units power cord? The fuse should be in the part of the power cord that plugs into the lighter socket. A 2 amp fuse should be good enough.
the fuse is located in the cigarette lighter plug, at the end you will see a silver cap and then the disk that goes over the top of it, that will turn and then you will have the front open to replace the glass fuse that is in it... to find the fuse size, after the fuse is out look at the silver ends it will have the size stamped on it... it might be a 40 amp fuse. or 20 amp. just look at the silver sides on the fuse you will find that there... hope this helps you out
There are 2 options for power plugs that can be purchased from Cobra for the 757. The straight 12V power cord is listed under item number: 420-030-N-001 and the coiled 12V power cord is listed under item number: 420-026-N-001. Both can be purchased from Cobra by calling their order line at: 773-889-3087 or visiting www.cobra.com
