I bought an acer aspire 9300 last april. recently my laptop does not want to play or burn cd's. it does acknowledge that there is a disc in the drive but will not play it. what will be causing this
The issue of your DVD not able to play or burn disks could be related to software or hardware, you need to try few steps to know the exact cause firstly make sure that the disk that you are using is good and it is not a bad media, the best way to figure this out is to use a number of disks and see if the drive is unable to play them, if the drive is unable to play all the disks that you have tried then try these steps below to fix the issue 1.Click the Start button, click Run. 2.In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK. 3.Click the plus sign (+)next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. NOTE: When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand displaying the folders it contains in the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor. When a folder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor 1.Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM. 2.Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet. 3.Click the plus sign (+) next to Control. 4.Click the plus sign (+) next to Class. 5.Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. 6.On the right side of the window, click UpperFilters. 7.Click Edit on the menu bar. 8.Click Delete, and then click OK. 9.On the right side of the window, click LowerFilters. 10.Click Edit on the menu bar. 11.Click Delete, and then click OK. 12.Click File, and then click Exit. 13.Restart the computer normally. Note: In few machines you will not be able to find both upper or the lower filters and there would only be one of them available, so please do not worry and follow the instructions and delete the one which is found either the upper filter or the lower filter which is available if you are unable to find both. 2. If you insert a CD into it and can you browse the CD content via explorer? If yes; the CD drive seems to be ok. If no, the CD drive is dirty and needs cleaning or faulty and needs to be changed.
3. If you can browse the content of the CD but the CD will not play, it might be the player software problem.

random problem with burning of CD's. What application are you running to burn CD's? You may need to check your device manager to make sure you have cd\dvd-rw drive installed. If using roxio or nero, suggect uninstall and reinstall if all looks good. if you are trying to burn a cd by using windows, you may not have correct driver or driver installed even if it tells you that copy is completed

It could be that the burner has gone out in the drive, this is a common problem. Before you go and replace the drive, it could just be a simple driver glitch, try uninstalling the drivers for the CD drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the drive and reinstall the drivers. If this doesn't work then you can replace the drive.
Right click anywhere on the desktop, open the screen saver tab, click on the power button at the bottom. You'll see a box that reads monitor, set this to never. That should take care of the screen shutting down. As far as the orange light, I'm guessing that's the battery light, and it's time for a new battery.(It should be green and flashes orange when the battery no longer works properly)
Try with another brand of disk; the Matsushita UJ870 drive of our 5315 burn my Sony CD's but not my Philips CD's (my Compaq V2617LA with an older Matsushita UJ840 drive has burned Phillips CD's in the last two monts)... Remember: CD and DVD lassers are different. I think because of that, i haven't see problems with Sony, Philips and Samsung DVD's... only with CD's...
This solution worked but the next time the laptop was turned on the drive was gone again?......
