Last night I finished hooking up my new Onkyo 7.1 HT-S5200 system. I used three HDMI cable to connect my TV, Blueray, and cable box. I upgrade the speaker wire to 16ga. The system is plugged into a Monster HT serge protector. When I turn the system on, I heard a pop and the system turned off. This happen three times. What am I doing wrong?

Turn everything off but the receiver. If it stays on turn another one on and see if it pops off if not continue. Most receivers have a pause start to prevent power surge. If it continues remove the protector and try the unit alone.

SOURCE: new home theater setup- no signal at tv using onkyo tx=sr605

This might somewhat help. Today I went back .. I went HDMI out of the Cable box and DVD player into 2 of the TVs HDMI ins. The digital audio out from each, straight to the receiver and things are working ok. All speakers are working OK. Sound isnt as loud or crisp but unfortunately I found no other solution.

SOURCE: No surround sound from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100. Video OK

Go to settings on PS3 and sound settings and set them to HDMI.

If the above did not work, try a auto reset, with unit connected. Hold the PS3 power button down and wait until you hear 2 beeps. The PS3 will automatically search your input/output channels.

I have researched on your issue and found that the Receiver is not capable of processing audio from HDMI input. It will bypass the signals from its HDMI input to HDMI output..
The Receiver has 3 HDMI input and one output. Hence you can use this as a HDMI switch to connect three HDMI devices to single HDMI port on the TV.
In order to get the sound from speakers connected to the Receiver, it is required to make alternate digital or analog audio connection.
You can confirm the information from the manual of the Home Theater System. Please refer page # 36 of the Manual to get the information. I have provided a link where you can download the Manual for the HT System:

Cable TV blinks on and off when connected to my Onkyo receiver.

I have the same problem.  It only occurs with my HD DVR (HDMI cable), not my blue ray (HDMI cable), or my xbox and wii (component video).  Video and audio cutout is random and drives the family nuts.  I am desperate for a solution.

Why cant I supply my onkyo surround sound system

You need to assign the HDMI input(s) to the functions they represent, using the Front Panel Tuning/Preset control...

If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that HDMI Input to an input selector in Setup.
For example, you could assign the “DVD” setting to “IN1”, and assign the
“CBL/SAT” setting to “IN2”.

Likewise if you use digital audio inputs...

Assigning the Digital Input
If there’s no sound, press the [DIGITAL INPUT] button repeatedly until sound is heard. The digital input is now properly assigned.
If you connect your DVD player to the AV receiver’s COAXIAL 1 DIGITAL IN, and your cable/satellite receiver
to the COAXIAL 2 DIGITAL IN, as shown, it’s not necessary
to assign the digital input.

Connecting directly to the TV is ideal....but then you would have to connect the audio through coax or optical unless the bluray player had an additional HDMI out.
So...what connection is going from the receiver to the television when it does not provide picture? If you do not have HDMI, DVI or component video going from the receiver back to the TV then you won't get a picture. However, you may not also get a picture if the video output resolution is adjustable in the receiver as well and does not match...make sure that the TV is set to the same resolution as the receiver, and that the video output of the player is also set the same.

My HT-S6100 had a similar problem with my DVD player and some times with my Cable/DVR box. The signal wasn't getting received at the TV. So, first I changed the input jacks my DVD and Cable box are plugged into on the receiver (e.g. from HDMI 1 & HDMI 3 to HDMI 2 & HDMI 4). Second, I reprogrammed the Input Assignments to match (e.g. HDMI in 2&4). Third, I deleted any Input Assignments that weren't applicable. For instance, I'm only using HDMI connections, but there were Digital and Component Input Assignments programmed in. When I say I deleted them, I actually set them to "----" (just scroll through the options and you'll find this.) Finally, I turn on my video/audio sources (PS3 in your case) and let them load/warm up before I turn on my Onkyo receiver. It seems to be working. Good luck.

Tivo HD will not record when Onkyo HT-SR800 is off

Do you want to run all your cables thru the receiver? There really is no benefit for you to do this since that receiver doesn't handle HDMI audio nor do any kind of component to HDMI conversion. Might as well connect your tivo box directly to the TV with HDMI. You'll have to switch inputs on your TV between the cable box, but its not a big deal.

Hi Mark

I am going to take a stab in the dark here...

Did you plug the hdmi from the receiver to hdmi via the monitor hdmi output? this is needed so when you change the device on the receiver ie. between setop box and dvd the monitor changes with it accordingly.

You may also need to go to the setop box to set it to use hdmi output at the right frequencies too..ie. 720p 1080i or 1080p.Also set it so it only sends the picture via hdmi but audio still with optical out.

good luck
