Your cd player is fubar and in definite need of replacement.
Tape unit seems to have a mind of its won. Try to reset the electronics to factory defaults. If that has no remedy, since it is a sony< best advise is to trash it. Repair cost is prohibitively expensive.
Tries it with other audio CD,if it have the same problems.Than the DVD player have a dirty laser eye scaner reader.Tries websites like Ebay.com,Amazon.com to buy a DVD player laser eye cleaner kit disc.
It is clear symptoms of bad optical laser or dirty optical lens. Please put lens cleaning CD in player, play that CD to clean dust on optical lens surface. If that helps, fine or replace optical laser block in player. I can provide you optical lens part number, please confirm is it Sony CDP-CX153 cd player or any other model. Thanks.
Unplug the unit, remove the cover and clean the laser lens glass with a Q-tip. Spray a bit of window cleaner on one end of the Q-tip (over a sink), then use that end to clean the objective lens of the laser. Then dry it with the other end. Wipe Carefully!
Do not apply pressure while cleaning, wipe slowly and then reassemble the unit and test. This is a common problem on many laser-based products, dust and smog get inside the unit and cloud the lens, causing it to skip or not read at all.
I got a free one of these from my work...well that is because it was having the same problem and they didn't want to mess with it haha. Sooo...I brought it home..thinking i could just buy a cd cleaner kit and clean the dirty lens..which is what normally causes these problems. To my dismay this didn't work (later found that the lens is a good half inch away from the disc)..so i decided to open the bad boy up (hey I got it for free...no harm crackin it open :-) ) After hitting the lens with a can of air..I tried again...no go. And just so you all know...this player runs vertically..not horizontally. I want to know how does the player read? the lens in stationary. All other players i have seen the lens moves up and down. I'm thinking it might have something to do with that. I gave up on cleaning it and started doing some searches..this was the only forum that was somewhat helpful. I agree with Silverscreen. When i watch the cd's playing the disc wobbles SLIGHTLY up and down. I think the rear stand-alone wheel is a bit too loose. ..The amount it wobbles is hardly noticed but is the only thing i see out of the ordinary.
Sorry but this unit has a problem with the tracking servo. The problem could be an alighnment, or a bad componet such as the laser assembly, tracking motor or tracking driver IC, with all of these problems the unit will need to come out of the vehicle. Good Luck
