Is the calculator suppossed to have "DEG" in the bottom right hand corner? I am trying to enter the numbers for the compound interest formula and I keep getting "Syntax Error" Is it because of the "DEG" mode? Or is this mode the default setting? How do you remove the "DEG" mode?

The DEG indicator on the screen is a reminder to the user that the ANGLE unit is in degrees. You can change the angle unit to Radian or Grads. That does not have any incidence on other calculations. It only affects the computation of trigonometric functions : sine, cosine, tangent, arc cosine, arc sine and arctangent. So if you have syntax error in the calculation of the interest formula, I can assure you it has NOTHING to do with the angle unit.
I do not see the formula you are trying to use, so I cannot be sure what you are doing wrong.

  1. Possible wrong usage of the regular minus sign instead of the change sign (-) or (+/-)
  2. Missing right parenthesis
  3. A right parenthesis is inserted at the wrong place.
  4. Incorrect use of the power function
I suggest you write the correct formula on paper and enter it step by step. A step is defined by an operation: multiplication, division, power. Start with the content of parentheses and work toward the outside. The last result is always the one stored in Answer memory (Ans).

What is the method of calculating interest rate for fixed deposit?

Fixed deposit calculations can be done by both manual and automatic methods. Now let us figure out the fd calculation in both ways:
1.) Manual Calculation Technique: It is the conventional process to know your Fixed deposit interest calculation. The formula for manual fd calculation is used as below:

Where,A = Final Amount
P = Principal Amount (initial investment)
r = Annual Nominal Interest Rate (as a decimal, not in percentage)
n = Number of times the interest is compounded per year
t = Number of years

2.) Online Calculator Technique: Nowadays online FD calculator is very amazing technique and it is a very useful online tool that helps you to easily calculate your Fixed deposit return. Online FD calculators uses simple technique in which you need to put your amount, tenure, interest rate and can get accurate results instantly. You can easily calculate and compare the interest receivable by changing the deposit amount.

C in lower corner

This indicates that compound interest will be applied to the odd period (for cases when n is not an integer). To use simple interest (and turn off the indicator), press STO EEX.

It indicates that the calculator is set for compound interest on the odd period instead of simple interest. To toggle this setting press STO EEX.

My hp is giving me wrong principal and interest payments.

Various formulas for calculating interests exist. Make sure you are using the correct one. If a C appears on the bottom of the screen and to the right, the interests are compounded. If No C is displayed the interests are simple. That could explain the discrepancies.

TI 83

Yes you can use it, here is the formula: Y= V(t+ (i/c))^(tc) V=amount put in, t=time, i=intrest rate, c= amount of times it is compounded.
(I know this because I have a TI-83 calculator)
