Have a S-M portable (5T231908X). -String Off Rewind Spool

Have a S-M portable (5T231908X). -String for carriage return has come off a spring loaded spool. Unsure how to rewind (i.e.clockwise, counter-clockwise, overtop, over bottom, part loop, full loop, multiple loops over spool, or what ever). Also spool will wind up to just a small amount of load tension before tension iis relieved. Should spool have stronger spring that is pre-wound before affixing return string? Directions or a lead to where I can find them will be appreciated. Thanks [email protected]

Wind the spool clockwise at least 5 rotations. hook the string on the top and carefully let the spring take up the slack. You will need a hook of some type to pull the string through and under the carriage to hook to the other side. You may need more tension on the spring if it will not move the carriage all the way to the left. It is possible that the spring has broken inside the housing. In which case you will have to take it to the shop.

The rewind spring for the pull start came out. What is the trick to rewind it???

put the housing end in first, take the spool and hold the spool end against it and wind the spool in the air until the spring is wound tight, then install the spool back into the housing. you have to keep your fingers on each end of the spring and hold the spool relatively close to the housing, obviously, but it's not a hard trick to master.

The pull rope will not rewind. How do I reset it?

The cord should be removed from the spool entirely, then wind the spool spring CCW for a number of turns making sure the spool can be turned for about 6 turns more (during start). Wedge the spool so that it can't unwind the spring again. If the old cord was about worn out, replace it with fresh. Melt the cord end somewhat so that the knot won't pull out, then tie an overhand knot in the cord end. Feed it into the inner retainer on the spool, then thread the cord around the spool 5 or 6 times in a CCW direction. Once wound, feed the loose end out of the cord port, slide the pull handle on, melt the cord end, and tie an overhand knot on it. Stuff the knot into the handle and release the wedge from the spool so that spring tension pulls the cord tight. Pull the cord out several times to make sure nothing interferes with cord and mechanism, then install on the saw and check the start operation. The spring should never bind-up when the cord is fully extended. Hope this helps!

Need info on putting line on troy bilt 4-cycle string trimmer. Need to know how to get spool off trimmer to replace trimming string on the spool.

Hold orange spool containing string while twisting the black plastic cap in the center, counterclockwise. This retaining cap is loosely spring loaded, so watch for the spring falling out. Once this locking cap is removed, the spool pulls right off.

Do you have to have a special tool to rewind the the s pring coil the one that is under the spool that is conected to the rope

You need a #15 Torx screwdriver. You have to disassemble the entire unit. If you are up to it, once you have it apart, you take the clutch cover off with the Torx screwdriver. You then have to spin off the clutch. Thia allows you to get the starting spool, rope and spring out. Before you take the spring out, look and note how it is situated in the spring holder. When you go to replace and/or rewind the spring...BE CAREFUL!!! It can hurt you. Need more? ask..Good luck...Lee

I can pull my string from a ryobi cs 30 and it wont go back

Either the rewind spring is broken or the starting spool is stripped. Either way you have to open up the entire unit. Check those two things and good luck...Lee

Pull string for Weed Eater Featherlite Plus came out

If you have the starter spool out (the one the rope goes in)...Here is what to do. Take the starter spool and change the rope out putting it back exactly as it was. Leave the rope hanging. Hold the spool and set it down on the rewind spring. Turn the spool on the rewind spring until you feel it is tight enough. While turning, hold the rope in the little slot in the spool so it can go around without hanging up. Once it is tight, get the rope in line with the spool opening and SLOWLY let the rope rewind. Put on the handle and put the unit back together.Good luck...Lee

Rob poulan leaf blower how to rewind pull string

I invert and secure the starter housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). I'm right handed so i tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. It will require about 2 turns of pretension to retract properly.
If you're lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool.

Both methods require about 2 turns of pretension to rewind the cord when pulled. HTH

My homelite trimmer string keeps getting stuck and when i tap it to release more string it doesn't the spring in it doesn't spring at all. I constantly have to stop take it apart pull enough string to edge...

It's sticking pretty good. Try what I do: Pull the head off and clean it out pretty good. Also clean where the spool attaches to the trimmer. Before you reassemble it, give it a shot of powdered graphite (I get mine at the hardware store. It's for locks). Reassemble the spool onto the trimmer. Bump it on the ground several times to distribute the graphite within the head. Now, press the head in and pull on the trimmer line. It should dispense a little line and stop, just like when the machine is in operation. If it works, you're done! If it doesn't work, you will need to replace the spool. They are available at the major hardware stores. Even if you have to replace the spool, the graphite trick is a good one. It'll keep the head dispensing line smoothly. I add the graphite probably every 7th or 8th time I rewind the spool.

The string gets caught and is jammed. Give the cover a quarter tun to remove it. Then, pull the spool off with the plastic cutting string. Unwind it a bit and rewind it so it's straightened out. Then feed the two ends out the holes on the side when you put it back.
