Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

External Blinking and Does not load on Computer

I connected my drive yesterday to show a client a video and it worked fine. I ejected and left it alone. A couple of hours later I came back to my desk to find the external blinking its green light. I tried to hold down the button for a a couple of seconds to see if it turned off but it just kept on blinking and does not mount on the computer. I need help because I have important video file projects on this drive for work. If anyone could provide their expertise that would be appreciated.

This morning, I came in to work to find that I was having the same problem. No response from the computer at all. The light just keeps blinking if it has any type of power. Cant turn it off.

Step one (and I assume it a windows machine) is to run scandisk. If lucky you may just have a cross linked file. You can do this
Step two is to download and run Ccleaner....both the application cleanup and the windows cleanup and then the registry cleanup (don't worry...the registry changes it makes are safe). These first two steps by the way are to provide a reasonably clean slate to work up from. Step 3 is to shut it down and then connect the mountable drive....turn on and see what happens. If it still does not recognize it go to my computer, then device manager and check to see what it says...if missing a driver install one (if no disk with it on it) simply point it at the microsoft link). If Microsoft does not have one you will need to go to the drive manufacturers link. That gets you started in the right direction.

But if you still can't get won't read the contents of the drive from Windows but the drive is there then download another free product from the net (cnet downloads) called that on your bad drive...recover what you can...and save it to CD's or upload files to free storage site on the net (I would do both if critical).

The last step is to download the disk diagnostics program from the drive it and see what it says. You might also, once your data is saved, format the drive and run a "through" scandisk on it.....if you have more than 4 bad clusters I suggest think new.

This gets you pointed in the right direction....Tango

Suddenly, my 500GB Seagate external hard drive couldn't mount on my iMac. It was working fine till yesterday. I connected them to the Mac USD port, and the light in the seagate is blinking... Any

I can only comment generically:

I would try to uninstall the drive on the OS. Then re-start the computer. After the re-start, connect the drive and see if the drive re-installs itself.

If the error persists, then the drive is indicating failure. To absolutely verify if it has failed, take the drive to a store where there are MAC computers and try the drive on one of their computers to see if it works.

A continuous flashing LED on most devices where the LED does not normally continuously flash is an indication of a failure of the device. Some devices will flash an error code when designed to do so, and if possible.

Using toshiba external hard drive. Windows XP, service pack 3. When I plug into usb port it shows on task bar usb device plugged in. Then I go into my computer and it doesn't show up.... Checked...

Try another USB cable. In case that the drive has no external power supply use a short cable. Keep in mind that each time you remove the drive without ejecting the proper way you may destroy the disk. Also if you already have done it, it will take longer to start up. If you can't eject it the proper way, shut down the computer, eject the disk and start up again.

Screen is blank on start up

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your Thinkpad. From the info gave there could be server issues so I will cover them to see which is your problem.

First, look in the upper left hand corner to see if you she a blinking cursor. If you do then this means the Operating System is not loading properly. Make sure that you do not have a USB drive plugged into the computer and that you do not have a disk in the CD-ROM drive. The computer may be trying to boot from these devices. Next you may try to reconnect your hard drive. Sometime the connection will get loose. Taking it out and putting it back in reseat the connection.

Second if you did not have the blinking cursor then it goes to a possible hardware issue. First thing is to reset the power state for the notebook. To do this remove the battery and do not have the notebook plugged into AC Power. Next hold down the power button for about 20 seconds. Doing this will discharge any left over power in the system. some times a computer will hung and you have to do this to reset it. Now just plug in the AC power to see if the display comes on and loads properly. If it does not try the external monitor toggle on the notebook. Usually it will be with the function keys. If you still do not have video you may try actually plugging in an external monitor. If the external monitor works try the video toggle again. If the nootbook still does not come on then most likely there is an issue with the notebooks display. Note if you could not get the external monitor to work then the issue is most likely with the notebooks video card.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions or problems feel free to ask.

USB drive problem

I had a client with this same issue. However, her issue was that the top left USB port would only accept flash drives. Your external harddrive is probably not getting enough power from your USB port. Try using two USB ports (you can get a connector for this) to power up the external harddrive.

Unable to connect the external hardd rive

Most people find that when they plug the Verbatim 160gb hard drive into their computer it won't show up. I fixed mine and it works great! As part of my question yesterday I thought it to be a formatting issue and it is. This hard drive is pre-formatted for Apple and not Windows so if you are using Windows you are going to have to reformat the HDD. It's not difficult, just takes some time. It took me about 15 minutes to find the solution.

Ok, bare with me as I did this half asleep and with some trial and error until I figured it out.

First, right click on the "my computer" shortcut on your desktop and click on "manage." Should be about the 4th option down from the top. Once you click on "manage" find "storage" on the directory tree to the left and then click on "disk management." Once you click on this you will see 3 window panes to include the directory on the left. On the bottom pane you will see your drives and one that says "unallocated" and "not initialized." Click on that drive to initialize it. Once it says "online" right click to format. Mine about an hour or so. Once it is done formatting it should work.

If you have any problems or need more clarification email me at [email protected] and I will work it again on my drive for more complete instructions.

Verbatim 250GB External Hard Disk not recognized by PC

Almost always, when a USB drive doesn't assign a drive letter in MY Computer the issue is a Mapped network drive using the drive letter the USB drive is attempting to use.

With the drive connected, open DISK MANAGEMENT find the USB Drive, right click it and assign it an available drive letter.
