Thanks J but I found the problem was with the transfer from the old computer on MAC OS10.3.9 to the OS 10.5 producing a situation where the download of driver was confused as to where the SYS files were. When I didn't bother with the download and used the drivers stored within 10.5 itself it worked like charm. Apparently a not uncommon problem. Finally, reconnected with the printer after trying different driver downloads, deleting everything, changing different options on the printer installation...
This is for system 10.5.x:
1. Delete that printer from your list of printers in System Preferences.
2. Make sure your computer, printer, and Asante box are all hooked up together and turned on.
3. Click + under the list of printers in System Preferences.
4. Click AppleTalk icon in top row of dialogue box that appears.
5. After a moment, click Bluetooth icon instead.
6. After a moment, unplug the power cord from your Asante box (but not from the electrical outlet).
7. After a moment, re-plug the power cord into your Asante box and, as
soon as possible after the "TX" light comes on, click the AppleTalk
icon again.
8. Within a few moments, your printer's name should appear. Highlight
its name, then make sure all the information about it that appears is
correct, then click "Add."
9. Everything should communicate beautifully. I had no further problems.
I connected my HP5MP to the DP-300U LPT1 port. I configured my port on the DLink Configuration tab, giving it a name "hp5" ...The default login is at http://192.168.0.10/ user:admin pass:(there is no pass by default)
On my Mac, I go to System Preferences > Print & Fax Click the + to add a new printer Select the IP option Choose the Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD Type in the Address: 192.168.0.10 Type in the Queue: hp5 Print Using: Generic PostScript Printer or better yet, 'Select a driver to use...' and find the driver for your HP LaserJet 5MP. Save it. Works like magic. ;-)
If you change the IP address or password on the DLink, just CYA and write it all down on a sticky note then tape the note under the DLink chassis. There's no reset button on the thing, and if you're o a Mac, you won't necessarily have access to the Windows utility to jack with the DP-300U. So, write it down, kidd-o!
On the two non working computers...uninstall the printer drivers and uninstall any info about the printer reboot.reset up each indivual (the two non working ones)computer with new drivers from web.reboot and they should work.RICHARDM69
Yes you can add more memory to this printer. It slots into the formatter (under left side cover)
Memory upgrades 1 MByte—C3130A 2 MByte—C3131A 4 MByte—C3132A 8 MByte—C3133A 16 MByte—C3146A Add up to 32 MBytes of memory to the HP LaserJet 5MP/6MP printers, for a total of 35 MBytes..
