I have a similar problem with my GE WWSE5240GOWW washer that just went out of warranty 20 days ago. The tub is loose and flopping around. Any suggestions?

My washer makes a loud knocking sound only in the rinse part of the cycle. I am assuming a loose tub, because the tub seems loose when I open the lid to stop the cycle (and the noise). It is a serious issue because the washer has even moved a couple of inches due to the loose knocking tub.... please help! This is a GE Top load washer as well. This is probably a normal GE washer tub issue. Problem is, you have to remove the inner drum to repair it. Before we go through all the instructions, let me know if you want to take this on yourself. Will need a good sized tool chest to do the job (1/4" and 5/16" nut drivers, screwdrivers, hammer, good sized pipe wrench, torks bits, etc). Let me know and we can go from there.
Gilpen, call the customer service number, your warranty will likely be honored. Sounds like the nut that holds the basket on backed off. Pull hard on the agitator to remove it, then remove the airbell. You should see a large nut at this point, if loose it, can be retourqued with an impact wrench. The nut needs 100+ ft-lbs and is a left hand thread.

most likely its the electronic board, easy to change. if you can use a second hand one out of a known working machine- see how that goes- it will probably cure the noise problem
does unit leak constant or only when spinning ther are 2 screws done low on front panel fill unit with water and watch center shaft there is a seal below basket
inside washer changing seal is a little difficult have also had this style of washer leak when starting spin cycle if water has not drained out fast enough http://www.repairclinic.com/Washing-Machine-Top-Load-Maytag-Style-Appliance-Diagram
this page has a break down of normal maytag top load machine part at center is called boot and seal have also had thi type unit leak where bolts go through tub
good luck ron
The tub should not become unbalanced over time. There suspension springs may wear unevenly, however. Replace all of the suspension springs and it should be fine.
thats normal tension on the belt if the agitator is making noise the cams within the agitator are worn (loud clicking or popping noise during wash) the agitator will need to be replaced
There is a vent at the back of the machine near the top that is covered by a small round white plastic cross pattern. Inside of the machine there is a black flexible hose that attaches to the vent from the top of the outer tub. inside of the tub attachment point is supposed to be a light blue plastic valve that looks like an old style army helmet on a peg. The peg fits into a flange in the opening on the outer tub. If this valve is missing water will escape from the vent on the back of the machine.
Another likely point of water leak is a loose inlet hose or missing washer on the inlet hose.
