If your printer is wireless you will still need to hook it up to the computer using a USB wire. You also need the printer install disk, called a driver that came with the printer. If you don't have the disk, don't worry. You can download it for free. Just google the name of the printer followed by the word driver. Then follow the prompts to down load it and load it into your computer..
If you have Windows XP,,just connect the printer, turn it on,,and windows will supply it's own driver.
You can also go to the HP web site and download the drivers you need as well.
why not contact HP support about this? if it is a brand new printer, probably fixing it "yourself" might ruin the warranty. read the terms of warranty before you attempt any self-inflicted-trial and error fixes.
