Question about GE Profile Prodigy WPSE4200A

Washer stalls while filling, must press start button to get it going again

I've got the GE Profile Prodigy top load washer. Lately the thing won't fill with water completely unless I check on it, see that it's stopped filling and hit the start button again. It then picks up where it left off. While watching it fill with water the water seems to barely dribble into the washer and makes a humming noise of sorts. I thought maybe it was clogged but every 25'ish seconds of filling the water will suddenly pick up quickly for MAYBE 10 seconds and then go back to dribbling. I do hear a slight "click" as the water fill changes from dribble to waterfall. This has been going on for maybe a month or two. I have yet to check anything really due to fearing ripping the washer open, but I've had enough. Thanks very much.

I did a little more testing when I went down to press "Start" again. We always wash our laundry using cold water (we're cheap and oil isn't). I tried setting it to warm and hot and both settings had no problem filling, once I changed it to cold is start dribbling. Thus, that was my first thought is I'll have to move the washer (it's on concrete blocks to raise it enough for the drain hose to reach where it has to) and remove the cold line and see how much crap there is. I know our faucets get a lot of crap stuck at the screen in them from our well. I'm betting this is it. Thanks for the response and I'll get back on the results. Thanks!!

I just noticed that. Set the thing to Warm (you're right, all cold rinses) and went down to check it and it was off again, hit start and it started back up. After this load of laundry's done I'm gonna check the screen. Thanks again and I'll report back.

It was the screen. Opened it up and did my best to scrape out the gunk. Fired it up and I've done like 4 loads of laundry lickety, split. Thanks all!!

While filling, the water slows down for a few seconds and then continues normally. Also, it will only fill normally when the lid is up. As soon as you put the lid down the tub will drain. It seems to be draining also as it is filling.

also that unit i belive only has a cold rinse so if it is clogged you will get the dribble on the rinse but only on the Wash if it is set to cold temp Which to me sounds like the clogged screen

Washer stops several times in the middle of cycle

possibly it could be your un-balance switch getting very sensitive to any type of movement of the machine, normally they only actuate during the spin cycle when you have a very off balanced load of clothes

Washer only spins

Have you tried to unplug the machine, sometimes the control boards can get stuck and if you unplug it for say 30 seconds then plug it back in, it may reset itself. otherwise you may have to call someone these are very complicated machines.
