Hi TCMARTIN. This should be pretty easy to do by yourself the instructions for adjusting your beater to bowl clearance is in your Owners Manual. I you don’t have the original manual you can easily download a PDF version of your Owners Manual from the KA website: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case K$45SSW and select the file listed for your model that appears under Owners Manuals (2): K45SSWH-0.pdf (2730.37 KB) and save that file to your PC. Turn to Page 13 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the mixer head height. I have extracted the instructions below:
Beater to Bowl Clearance
Your mixer is adjusted at the factory so that the flat beater just clears the bottom of the bowl. If for any reason, the flat beater hits the bottom of the bowl or is too far away from the bowl, clearance

Tilt-Head models
• Unplug mixer.
• Lift motor head.
the beater is rubing and the paint is comming off - 10ab9a9.jpg
• Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.
• Make adjustment with flat beater, so it just clears surface of bowl.
If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.

I hope this helps! – Howard, Burke, VA

Professional 600 575 watts 6 qt. beater stem is loose and lets beater drop onto bowl.

b68be83b-c0cb-45d6-8d74-337f1cf098bd.jpgThe part you see is called the planetary, it has two shafts, the long one is called the center shaft and if it is falling off you need a new planetary, the second shaft (shorter) is called the agitator shaft (the beater attaches to it, if this is the culprit then1 you are not attaching the beater correctly2 the locking pin that the beater attaches to to hold it in place is missing3 you have way too much "gunk" build up on the agitator shaft and the beater is not attaching correctly4 if the beater falls into the bowl with the agitator shaft still attached you have three additional problems a) the snap ring a top the agitator shaft has broken off or come off which in turn means that
b) the gear at the top of the shaft has come off and may very well been knocked around and possibly damaged beyond future use which means that you will need a new one and also
c) the shaft pin that holds the agitator gear in place has come out or been broken also
the fix is easy and your parts cost $ will be from $30.00 to $80.00 dollars depending on which parts you need. Now before you get palpitations, cost are listed as a possible need
1 new planetary $30.00, you may not need
2 new agitator shaft and gear assembly $27.00, pretty sure that you need but maybe not
3 new gasket $6.00
4 new gear grease $6.00 KA says 2 oz. (don't buy a 2lb (26.00 bucks) can when you only need 2 oz).

Without more clarity or a picture I can't help further. but before you start tearing you machine apart go to the KA website and get a parts list for your mixer

Beater hits bowl beater height adjustment screw does not fix problem

Is this a new beater that you just bought? Or is it the same beater you have had? When you adjust the screw, which way are you turning the screw, how much is it hitting the bowl?

If the beater is too close to the bowl the adjustment screw should be turned in. If the threads on the screw are loose the screw needs to be replaced.

Page 17 and 21 both show how to adjust the head of the mixer so the beater his the bowl correctly. Here is a link to the service manual: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Hi, I have this mixer for 5 years now and never had a problem until today. I was making bread using the mixer and all of a sudden, the hook started scraping the bowl and taking off the paint. It is as if...

Attach the Flat Beater to the Beater Shaft, and raise the bowl.
If the beater touches the bottom of the bowl then inspect the
Agitator shaft : the retaining ring should be leveled with the
surface of the Planetary. If not, then of course the bottom of
the beater will start scraping the bowl. You can use a rubber
mallet to tap the shaft back in.

Top wobbles and beaters scrape bottom of mixing bowl when in use

Turn the mixer over and look up where the pin goes through the two pieces. There is a screw there which secures the pin. Tap the pin into position and tighten the screw.

Beaters will not move

You have probably stripped a gear in the gear housing. Here is the breakdown of the gearbox:

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208212010.pdf

The newer "more improved" mixers use plastic gears and they can't take the beating, no pun intended, and fail.

The good news is that the most likely gear to fail is cheap. Here it is on amazon.com:

Kitchenaid Classic -Mixer Head wobbles or shakes back and forth

This may have a simple solution: This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.

If the beater to bowl adjustment quickly comes out of alignment, you may need to seek service. You may find a Kitchenaid certified service location locally at the following website:
