The best solution I have found is to install a virtual machine running Windows XP: if you have kept your old XP disk and the license number from the bottom of your old PC, then it is relatively easy to set-up using VMware player see instructions here http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11060/create-an-xp-mode-for-windows7-home-versions-and-vista/.
Once installed, you can basically start windows XP in a window, and install your old scanner driver (and any other XP software for that matter) and it all works like a charm!

Trying to load CanonScan N124OU onto Windows 7 and get error message "there is no application registered for this event"

canon scan n1240u will work on Win7

here's how:

go to this site: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_n1240u#DriversAndSoftware

click "Drivers and Software" then select OS "Windows XP" then download "WIAdriverN670UN676UN1240U.EXE"

Install the WIA driver on your Windows 7 OS and used only mspaint to capture image on the scanner

TWAIN doesn't work on Win7 but WIA still doesGood Luck!

I just unstalled Vista Ultimate, and I cannot find any drivers for my Scanner N124ou lide 30N; the set up disc I have is for windows XP advice

They did not make a win 7 driver yet, so you can try the vista driver, not sure if win 7 will allow it but does not hurt to try, sometimes it will error
OS not supported.

Here is the vista driver on the canon website below.

You can also plug it in and go to devise MGR and have it update the driver, if windows see's it, or when you plug it in windows might ask if it can search for one.

Canon Canoscan D1259U2F dont have any driver for Windows 7 64-bit

the only successful method I found for using CanoScan D1250U2F in 64 bit Windows 7 (I guess the same would be for 64 bit Vista) is to use Windows XP Mode in Virtual PC (attach the scanner as USB device and that's it - works perfectly)

I had a problem with Windows 7 detecting the device as CanoScan (needed for Windows XP Mode to detect is as USB device and allow attach) - the solution was to unplug the scanner, plug it in and CANCEL Windows 7 hardware detection process before it finishes - this leaves it as "CanoScan" device (auto-detect will leave it as "Unrecognized device" and with that unusable/un-attachable in Windows XP Mode)

latest versions of Windows XP Mode will make your hard drives accessible as network locations (no need for external media)
