More than one ink tank of the following color is installed

I take the cyan out, when I put it back in close the lid, the same message comes on. I have unpluged the printer with the same message after waiting a few minutes. would you suggest to take all of the tanks out and putting them back in? Any suggestion will help.

I have also been getting a U071 Error message indcating "more than one tank of the following color in installed"  Any ideas or solutions?

  • Anonymous Feb 11, 2008

I've received the message: "More than one ink tank of the following color is installed Yellow [8]. Use only one ink tank per color at a time."

  • Anonymous Feb 14, 2008

yes me too. it says 'more than one ink tank of the following color is installed'. and mine is BK color. and it's driving me mad!

  • Anonymous Feb 14, 2008

I have exactly the same problem, wish there was some solution as am using genuine new canon ink cartridges, mine alternates between saying I have more than one cartridge and saying that the ink tank cannot be recognised.

  • Bonnielou Feb 17, 2008

My MP830 is telling me the same thing about my large black ink cartridge. It's not physically possible to have more than one of them installed at the same time! It's driving me crazy. G-r-r-r!!

Just did some other web search and found someone that said it's a faulty cartridge and Canon will repace it for you. I just put in a new cartridge and so far, so good!

  • eureka two Feb 18, 2008

I too have the same problem, I either get "more than one ink tank" etc or "the ink tank cannot be recognised. I feel like ditching an otherwise good and not cheap printer out the window! I have been in touch with several technicians and was advised to try google for a solution, so here I am.

  • Anonymous Feb 19, 2008

More then one installed... always magenta. This is on an IP5200R.

  • Cohibax Feb 25, 2008

Got it with yellow (1681) error - blocks everything. Will replacement work?

Tried all resets, smells like error on the chip of the cartridge

  • Anonymous Apr 09, 2008

First time it happened with Cyan cartridge and it took 4 months for Canon to replace it. Now it it doing it with the black cartridge. But this is a Pixma IP6600D - looks like bodgy Canon workmanship

  • 020546 Apr 20, 2008

I wish to add my name to what must be a very long list. My 5200R also tells me I have two cartridges of the same colour when clearly I have not- Magenta every time. These are genuine Canon cartridges. I tried a range of obvious actions e.g. holding down buttons ,turing it off and on while removing ink tanks, The only effective way was to buying another Magenta this overcame the problem for a while. Now it is back. This is my first Canon and I would agree that the ink tanks do not last and are expensive. On top of this I now cannot use it. It is extremely annoying. If all Canon can do is replace the cartridge then I might as well bin it.

  • carolfield Apr 23, 2008

I also have the same problem. Says more than one color ink tank installed. Will not print, I have changed ink cartridges and followed all other suggestions for a solution. Nothing works.

We all should picket Canon until they resolve this problem!

Canon Printer Pixma MP500 (Error warning comes up that-more than one tank of the following color is installed ( Color8Y yellow) This is not true. The color Yellow (8) is a brand new cartridge, yet the problem continues to exist. Have tried more than one new yellow(8) cartridge. Cannot seem to get the error warning message to go away. Because of this the printer will no longer function

  • konigin06 Apr 29, 2008

Yes, same problem as the others; the printer tells us there are two magenta cartridges when there are not. Or it says it doesn't recognize the cartridge. However, after turning the unit off and on, it will occasionally still print. Very annoying!

    Canon Pixma iP6700D

All too familiar problem with not recognising / more than one installed re: magenta / yellow & prob others. (Was) just over a year old with not that much use.
Tried putting all inks in & out, as elsewhere suggested - only ever prints the first doc - if you're lucky. Even did it with one that needed replacing - from same 3/5 pack.

Any long-term clues would be great.
Was orig worried that it was re: a poss old(?) 3/5 pack or some fake?

This is was an expensive 'domestic end' bit of kit and great till this happened. I am beginning to hate Canon, after other products have developed probs and they never own-up to anything in their help sections etc. Utterly disgraceful (polite version!)

Please help with a solution, I think it could be a computer chip or some type computer type prob. within the printer. I purchased a pkg. of $60.00 ink cartridges and here we go the same "more than one in tank of the folowing color is installed" drama. This is a great printer when it doesn't have this prob. I think maybe the canon manufacturers of the ink tanks could also be making their ink tanks defective so they are not reading appropriately.

    Canon Pixma MP500

When I turn on my computer it says ''More than one ink tank of the following color is installed''

It's saying that there is more than one yellow when there's not.

I tried everything ever possible with it and nothing works!

It's really annoying and it prevents usage when I am not even going to use the printer!

    same as everyone else!

  • ynote Nov 18, 2008

I too have the same problem when it comes to the "cyan" ink tank. Very frustrating. Sometimes it takes 5 times of taking it out and putting it back before it rights itself.

  • Anonymous Nov 27, 2008

I also get the"more than one tank of the following color in installed" error message concerning cyan. Have tried replacing ink cartridges to no avail.

  • Indigo Blue Nov 28, 2008

I too an frequently getting the "more than one ink tank of the following color: cyan" error. It usually takes a series of removing/reinstalling the ink tanks and shutting down/starting up the printer. My MP500 has been a great printer to far, but now I'm starting to get annoyed...

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2008

Same problem which occurred just after installing a new magenta tank on my IP4200. The ink it thinks is duplicated in Magenta.

  • freeknight Dec 07, 2008

I've had the same problem ever since I bought my MP500. Usually the yellow ink. You can see from reading other forums it is a very common fault.

Canon just say replace it with a new cartridge, which does fix the problem temporarily but it is not the solution.

Canon won't do anything about it because they make more money by us forking out another $30 to replace a cartridge that we did not fully use.
    Bastards!

  • Anonymous Mar 21, 2009

I have this problem with my Canon iP4200. I was assuming it was because I had the cartridges refilled.

  • Anonymous Mar 23, 2009

My MP830 does this, it sucks and Canon needs to fix it pronto! Otherwise, people won't buy their products when they read reviews like this

  • Anonymous May 08, 2009

Just bought new tanks. Same problem.

Other forums report this problem as a faulty ink cartridge that cannot be recognized or gets recognized as the wrong color. Calling canon tech support will usually result in a free replacement from Canon. If not, try purchasing a new cart before ditching the printer.

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2013

This worked for me. Luckily, the faulty cart was just about empty, so it wasn't a complete waste.

I've had this same problem for the past year (have had the printer a Cannon ip6700D for two years) Almost every time I turn on the printer it tells me there are more than two cartridges of magenta installed, it's always the same color. Anyway what works for me is opening the cover, allowing the cartridges to go through their cycle then closing the cover. Most of the time it works and I'm able to print with no problem. Sometimes I have to repeat opening the cover two or three times before I'm able to print. Yes it's annoying but so far it is the best solution I have found. I love this printer and hope that somewhere out there is a better and long term solution for this problem. Good luck to all of us!

  • Anonymous Sep 11, 2008

I recently contatced Canon's tech support about this problem and to their credit they responded quickly and sent me a new magenta ink tank. So for the past two days I have been able to use my Canon Pixma ip6700d printer once again. Now as happy as I am about this I just can't help but feel this is going to happen again. In my opinion (as I also stated to Canon in an e-mail) there are many, many, many of these ink tanks out there for us to purchase and they are not about to be recalled anytime lately. Once again that is only my opinion and I'm just going to feel uneasy every time I turn on my printer. So give it a shot, contact Canon, have them send you a new free ink tank and keep your fingers crossed when you insert the ink tank. If anything the fact that my printer is working again at lesat tells us it is the ink tanks themselves that are faulty and not the printer. Good luck!

SOURCE: check ink U071 cyan

Are you using genuine ink cartridges? If not, then perhaps there is no microchip on your ink cartridge. You can take the old chip off your used cartridge and put it on this cartridge and see if this solves your problem.

For iP Series Printers: Holding the paper feed button down for 3-5 seconds will allow you to override the counter. The cartridge will print , however the ink level display may not show.

For MP Series Printers: Holding the STOP/RESET button down for 3-5 seconds will allow you to override the counter. The cartridge will print, however the ink level display may not show.

SOURCE: more than one ink tank of the following color is installed

I e-mailed Cannon Customer Support and they are sending me a replacement cart by Fedex. Since this seems to be a persistent problem I don't think this is necessarily a fix. The printer is disabled until I get the new cart and with carts costing each about $14 it doesn't pay to have too many extra's around.

Keeps saying install c

Hello,

When the printer says "install C" it is referring to the Cyan (blue) ink cartridge. If this is not a new cartridge, you might have to replace it. If this is a new cartridge, try following these steps.

1. Unplug the power cable.
2. Remove all 4 ink cartridges.
3. Close the ink cover
4. Plug the power back in.
5. Wait for the machine to warm up and tell you that the ink is empty.
6. Reinsert all 4 ink cartridges.

If you keep getting the same message you should try another cartridge. You can put the yellow cartridge in the blue spot to see if you get the same message. If you get the same message then the machine is broken. If you get a new message then the cyan cartridge needs to be changed.

Thanks,

Pat

Error code U071 , more than one ink tank of te following color is installed, is the message on the screen. This is not the case as each cartridge is different and correctly installed?

Hi there,

Error U071 : More than one ink tank of the following color is installed. U071.
Action : Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the appropriate positions.
The machine will not print if the wrong type of ink tank is used, or if it is installed in the incorrect position.
Be sure to install the ink tanks in the correct order. The proper arrangement from the left is Black (CLI-8BK), Black (PGI-5BK), Yellow (CLI-8Y), Magenta (CLI-8M), Cyan (CLI-8C).

Hope this hepls.

Canon MP830

From time to time my MP830 shows the same problem ... just opening the main tray and closing it again restarts the ink test after which in most times the problem is solved.
If after two tries the error message is still present I remove and replace the related ink cartridges.
By now I could remove the error message in each case

Misreads ink tanks: says full ones are empty and there are 2 cyans, etc.

I had the same problem -- error message saying two cyan print tanks installed. Nothing helped (including disconnecting power cord). Then found I had an older cyan print tank still in its pack on hand, Installed that. No further problems. Assume this means print tank giving error is part of a faulty batch so am returning to retailer for refund from Canon.

Canon ink tank problems

I think I figured this B!tch out.

When you get the error:
"More than one ink tank of the following color is installed" or
"Ink cartridge not recognized"

Open up the lid where the cartridges are and hold done the "SEARCH" button. This has been working for me, and I bought my ip6600d in 2005, so my machine is old, and ready for this..........ORIGINAL INK!!! Never really used it beyond printing very few pics. So I was really pissed when I found these messages to almost 5 years after buying this printer. So to recap, open the lid where the ink cartridges are while holding the "SEARCH" button, hold it up for like 5 to 10 seconds, place lid down still holding the search button, then let go of the search button. I did notice the alarm was lit, but went away after I released the search button. Good Luck!!!

Until I held the search button down I had turned of the printer, reseeded the cartridges and open and closed the lid but it never worked.
