Question about LG (GSA-4166B) (GSA4166BB) DVD RW Dual Layer Burner

2 Answers

I'm having a problem with my burner reading and burning cds or dvds. It will burn sometime, but at a very slow speed. I've reinstalled the software & it can take 20 mins for a cd & 25-30 mins for a dvd. I need help. ;-(

Having the same issue with my LG GSA-4166B burner. Burning either fails or works at 1x the speed. Running an eMachines with Athlon 64 3000+ processor, XP, 1.5 GB RAM. Any help would be appreciated

I have a similar problem to the one originally listed with my HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B, with exception that drive refuses to recognize DVDs at all -- it will not burn or read -- and the CD burn does not work at all (about 25% of the time it reads CD okay, but slow). Have not been able to find assistance for almost a year. Problem began shortly after warranty on drive expired (like 2 or 3 days).
I've done all the standard attempts (check cables, run diagnostics with nero, uninstall ide channel and reboot, etc.), all to no avail.
I have upgraded firmware thrice (once at suggestion of LG) and downgraded once -- none of which has changed the drives behavior -- with exception of second upgrade to force a 4164 flash caused the drive to only be recognized as a cd-rom (w/o write capability). The third upgrade restored the drive to a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B forcing the flash of LGs own firmware.
All steps occurred post warranty expiration and post problems. The drive worked perfect with all CDs (CD+/-R, CR-ROM, audio, data, mixed, burned, unburned, pre-fab, etc.) and with all DVDs (DVD+/-R, DVD-ROM, DL, audio, data, mixed, burned, unburned, pre-fab, etc.)
One more thing (I have never used over burning option on this drive, my TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552D still works fine even after over burning around 10 to 15 audio CDs, however I stopped doing this when my old CD/DVD burner (I think it was a Toshiba) completely stopped working after only over burning twice (which my HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B replaced the old CD/DVD burner).

Cant watch DVDs Or burn DVD discs?

I have this drive as well and it just won't read some DVD's.

P.S. That solution is useless...while it may be usefull advice it in no way gets my DVD drive to function.

I have the same problem. Had drive for almost a year and always worked fine. Can read and burn cds but when I put in DVD and autoplay comes up it says blank cd. When I burn data files with nero it will say writting lead in but freezes there and I have to restart. Tried burning ISO with PowerISO and message comes up saying "There is not enough free blocks on media" Have firmware version 1.02. After reading everyone elses problems I guess I will trash it doesnt look like there is a solution

My Memory, and Software are definitely the problem (unless they caused the initial onset somehow), and the following information may also be helpful:

Clean install of Windows XP Professional Makes No Difference
Clean Installs (including programs individually, so no conflicts) Makes No Difference
Installing drives into other computers (MSI Celeron suitcase & ASUS A8N-SLI Athalon 64 home built) Makes No Difference

Problems no appearing for CDs too

You should have enough memory to burn DVD and it eats a lot of time... Also before burning, close all other applications running as to set the computer for burning your DVD's set it to Maximum priority, which means you should not use the computer when the process starts. Disable also your screen saver and use an appropriate DVD-disc, pay attention to the specification of your DVD drive... If it has a DVD+ then use a DVD-CD that has a "+" sign, Don't burn too much DVD so your burner will last longer or won't easily damage... have it rest for awhile before burning again.

Hope this helps... goodluck..

My lg GSA-H55N dvd writer is not playing Cds but plays Dvds fine

your DVD ROM lens has became weak.
and it cannot be repaired.
But if you manage to open the DVD ROM clean the dust in it & it will start working again but be careful remember that no power should be attached to ROM.
or you can buy a lens cleaner from market and try that.
pls rate my solution

Wont burn dc or dvd

Have you tried installing the original software did it have one if NOT. Then go to google type LG DRIVE 16 HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B Software. See what google comes up with you will be surprised. The reason why its not burning as you say is because you are using a foreign software. I hate saying this but sometimes hardware can be sentimental like your wife/husband. Goodluck your prolem lies with software not hardware.
