The screen has frozen and gone snowy, no red lights on the consol

You have a bad console. These are made rather cheaply and do fail out of the box. Surgest you take it back to where you got it from and exchange it.

this sounds like it will error e74 which will need a reflow
but dont overheat with a towel as this will cause more problems

Hi,Turn on unit until the red light flashes and the error code(E 73) shows up on the screen. Next insert toothpicks in the back of the console(while unit is running) into the cooling fans, this is to suppose to overheat the console and start two red lights flashing. Turn off console when this happens(unplug all cords from console) and turn the system back on.

This can sometimes occur prior to console failure. This happened to me just before I got the red ring.

Does this happen as soon as you turn it on? Or is it just in games? Or perhaps a particular game?

All I can say is, check your cables, push them in just to be sure, check that the power supply light is yellow, or green when the console is running.

It's impossible to provide a solution to a problem with so few details but I hope this helps you.

As you didn’t state how many red lights are on your Xbox i will post all the Red ring of death errors.
All sections red (4 Red Lights) = Could not detect the AV cable. Check all of the cables at the back of the console.
3 Red lights (Sections 1, 3, 4) = General hardware failure. Contact Microsoft Support.
2 Red lights (Sections 1, 3) = Overheating. Make sure that your console is in a well-ventilated area with a good air flow and try again.
1 red light (Section 4)= Hardware failure. This is usually combined with an error code on screen. Contact Xbox support.

If the lights are red, then you got the RROD (RED RING OF DEATH) call ing 1-800-4MY-XBOX to send your console in and get it repaired. Or do the Towel Trick to fix it yourself.

Two or more things, first make sure you have your audio vidio cables correct

Yellow= Video
Red= Audio right
White Audio left

Also make sure that the tv matches the input your cables are connected into. I would make sure the restart the PS3 to make sure the video is good (after checking the tv input)

3 red lights is the red ring of death, 4 means your AV cable is disconnected. If it freezes up though, you have a bad DVD player in it. I would send it back.

It's called the red ring of death. Usually means that your system is bad, but I would not go that far yet. If usually the red rings go all the way around. Have you tried to make sure that all the cords on the back were pluged in correctly and tight?
