Check these instructions. All drives can be Master, Slave or CableSelect depending on the jumper setting. Cable Select (CS) is always a safe bet.
PATA HDD's (the ones that take the ribbon cable) have had the jumper settings printed on the label for the past 10 years. Different makes have different settings so we would need to know the make and size of HDD.
You could also use trial and eror without damaging the HDD.
SATA do not have jumpers as they are "cable select" and master is normally the one in the first SATA connection on the MoBo
