check around the disk tray for dust and use a vaccum cleaner to clean it, then use a wet cd lens cleaner with cleaning fluid a few time.
This should cure the problem but it might be that your drive is dead
Is this a used console. If it is someone changed the disk drive. The disk drive and motherboard are a couple. You need to flash your drive. To marry the two.
Ok, this is optical lens assembly failure. the lens is burned out and unable to scan due to lens failure. simply replacing the dvd rom optical lens assembly will restore the reading ability of your unit.
this is the laser unit that is faulty, it either needs replacing or you could try cleaning it with a cotton earbud to see if that helps. if its still doing the same after cleaning you could also try adjusting the laser power, sometimes after its been played for years the laser loses power and you will have faults such as this. adjusting the 'pots' on the laser itself to around 282 will help greatly.

many people put the xbox on the floor, the cooling fan sucks all kins of **expletive** into the open drive. a small piece of fishtank hose to the blow nozzle of a vaccuum cleaner, to blow loose the debri, and then **** it out. try not to disassemble the xbox, MS will void the extended red ring of death warranty for any opened xbox

What you have to do, is clean the "eye" the thing under the disk tray that reads the game, you probabley got that dirty or damaged somehow. Try spraying compressed air into the open disk tray to get any quick dust off. if that does not work then try finding other ways to clean it or call 1-800-4my-xbox and have microsoft check out the system to see whats wrong with it
Similar problem here. Worked fine last night. This morning...every disc put in gets you a "unplayable" response. Does play DVDs though. Weird. Called xbox and they are sending us a box for repair. This is the second time sending it in. We had the ring of death crap before and had to send it in. It was in repair when Halo 3 came out. My son was having fits not being able to play it.
xbox is not on the top of my list as being a good, reliable gaming system.
