I have a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040N drive in stalled in an emachine Laptop, the drive will read data,cds music and dvd movies, but can not burn either cds or dvd...Depending on which program i use for burning Roxie, it says the drive has reported problem with media, and with windo media player, it says install burner, & with Sothink DVD maker, it gives me, there is no supported recorder available.

open explorer and go to 'My Computer'
right click the DVD/CD-ROM Drive
click on the tab labeled 'Recording' (usually on the far right)
click the option that is labeled 'Enable CD recodring on this drive'
...and POOF, magic happens...

ya it ll work... first change the cd to write mode ..hence not able to burn files...

I had the same problem. I finally got a knowledgeable tech at Gateway who knew that a patch had to be downloaded. I'm sorry but I don't have the link anymore but you might be able to find it in there white papers now that you know that it exists

my HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N has a problem i cant up date the drivers in my computer it is missing so if in incert a cd it cant be found my HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N has a yellow exclamation an status Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

I Have A : HL-DT-ST- DVD-RAM GSA-H22N DVD Burner That Works Fine With (CD Burning/ Reading) & (Data Burning/ Reading) But I Have A Very WIERD Problem With The DVD : Here I Go, When I Use Any Program To Burn DVD Like Nero, DVD Shrink Etc.. (It Appears That) The Movie Is Burning Well, Because In The Burning Process It Doesn't Says Something Like:Bad Disc, Not Succefully Burned Or Any Sign That The DVD Burner Is Damaged , Also When It Finish Recording You Can See The Data Burned In The Disc By The Lines It Forms BUT !! I Don't Know WHY The Fu$%@@ , When You Test The Movie In Any DVD Player , Comp OR Whatever THE MOVIE DOESN'T WORK.
