On automatic on mode when pugged at the wall outlet, continuous on mode, can't be put off

this option is in the mainboards BIOS. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your bios. Go through each menu area in turn until you find the "at power on" option and set it to standby or do nothing.. then save and reboot the machine.

After installing Windows 7 on a Thinkpad R40 I lost standby mode. Standby mode was working correctly under Windows XP but doesn't seem to be available under Windows 7. What can I do to get Standby back?

You will need to download the motherboard drivers for you computer from the IBM website. you can get them from here...

It appears that there is not any drivers available for Windows 7...or even Vista for your computer so they might not work.

Printer driver vs standby

Indeed this seems rather odd, and also a inconvenience. However, after following up with some research I found following Microsoft Knowledge Base. In a nutshell, any one of the following may cause Standby mode not to function properly becasue of this printer: device drivers, a program running in the background which interferes with Standby mode, or a BIOS Power Saving setting which needs to be enabled. So you may have to continue disabling the printer, or contact the hardware manufacturer from the printer to find out if any updates are coming to resolve that odd issue.
