Dishwasher is making a loud grinding noise when it's started. Doesn't matter the cycle choice; the cycle starts as normal then once started up starts making a sort of grinding noise as the water is pulsing, like something is stuck or blocking the "push" of water. I couldn't see anything stuck in the bottom - any thoughts before I call a repair person? I've never owned a dishwasher before - maybe there's a basic drain/blockage thing I should check out first? And, any recommendations for repair in the Oakland, CA area if I do need it? Thanks!

No a noise filter is a different kettle of fish. That stops electrical interference noise from affecting your television, radios and electrical devices.

The most likely source of the hum is the start capacitor on the motor, or the motor itself.

Sounds like there is something in the filter trap that is right before the mini disposal that is a fan blade, on top of the motor.

Very likely the bearings in the motor have begun to fail. You can replace the motor, but for a 15 year old DW, sometimes it makes better sense to just buy a new one. Depends on the features the old DW has, vs new, vs motor replacement cost.

I have a very similar dishwasher, with a very similar problem. I fixed it by removing debris from the water evacuator pump located towards the front of the bottom of the machine (the last motor before the drain hose. In my case, grape stems had clogged it up. Once emptied, it purrs once again. NOTE: don't disassemble the motor, just flush it out, there is an o-ring gasket that is a bear to re-install.

Newer washers are designed with a food grinder inside to help grind up large pieces of food. What you are hearing is the grinder doing its job. You do not need to worry about the noise. It should go away after a while as the food particle is ground up.

My Dishwasher had the same loud Grinding Noise.
It was a piece of a plastic fork lodged behind the macerator blade.
This is at the suction to the pump just under the strainer. check this out first before you pull everything apart. You should be able to get to it by taking the lower arm off and pulling the strainer out. Hope this helps.

It could be the impeller on the motor. The impeller fits over the shaft of the motor and might have split/broken up. That funny noise is probably the shaft spinning inside the damage impeller. Fortunately the impeler is fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. I believe there are one or two parts/covers to remove that are held in by a roughly half dozen torx screws.
