My playstation 3, 40GB model, does not read the disks. I can play for about 5 minutes without it freezing, then when I restart it, it cant read the disk. after around 2 hours I can play for another 5 minutes!
It also gets really hot but the fan doesnt seem to go into overdrive to get rid of the heat. Im unsure whether the disk read error has something to do with the system overheating. The system only gets really hot when I play games on it, its ok when im playing demos or watching movies but once I place a disk inside it heats up.
I have also restored the system to get rid of any problem such as corrupt data, but this still hasn't solved the problem.
This problem has something to do with your PS3's lens. It may have gone bad too. This happened to me too and I brought my PS3 to sony. The culprit was bad lens.

try puting in a ps2 game in and play it for 1 minute then quite and take it out and put in your ps3 game in it should work if u get a error code well i dont no wat to tell you. hope it works..
does not sound good. do any other disk have that problem? if so its your system and i recommend calling sony for custumer support, if not you may have a fualty disk due to perhaps incorrect area codes within the disk
You won't be able to, unfortunately, without voiding your warranty with Sony. Your disk reading laser is either defective, or has dust into it. I recommend calling Sony and asking for a repair to be ordered. Hope this helped!
It sounds like your laser is going bad. This is a common issue for the PS3. The tell-tale sign is it starts reading less and less and having more errors.
Can you be any more specific? is this a problem with one disk, one type of disk or all disks? What is the exact error you are getting? Are you trying to play a game, play a film, play an audio CD or are you using your PS3 as a Linux computer and trying to open a data disk? have you tried more than one disk?
Without specifics there's just no way to guess what the problem is.
