Question about Honeywell HZ-325 KAZ Ceramic Compact Heater

Honeywell Compact Quick Heat Ceramic heater with tilt feature - HZ 325

My office space heater will turn on for about 5-20 seconds and then it turns off. It will not turn on again for a while and if it does it only stays on for another couple of seconds - any suggestions on fixing this? It's electric and the light always stays on to show it's connecting to the outlet fine.

Your prob is their is a thermostatic solinode that is trigger the unit to go off--because it thinks itself as too hot and unsafe to be on--this trigger was defective or damaged by disuse and/or fatigue------give it a shake-- better yet, when cool and unplugged-vacuum or blow out with compressed air-with out disturbing integrity of workmanship on device--if that no worky--time for new one---thermostatic element is dirty, device being of differing Mghz than outlet, if fairly new device--amperage of outlet is too small for device to work properly. If it is a 240 volt or a 120 volt device and your attempiting to use the wrong voltage outlet--STOP USING THE DEVICE

See if there is a little brass-looking bulb on a wire (sensing bulb) inside that can be moved away from the heat. My other thought would be maybe there is supposed to be some insulation between the control unit and the heating element that was inadvertently discarded?

I need a tilt switch for the honeywell HZ-341-bl porable heater. Where do I find one and how much do they cost? Jim

Hi, Jim...

I'm presuming that your heater has a tilt switch that isn't working. Is this right?

Tilt switches used to contain mercury (which has been phased out because it's so toxic). They now contain ball bearings... which may have gotten frozen (especially if you live in a high-humidity area).

I'd first of all open up the heater, identify the switch (generally black plastic, around 1" long by 1/2" wide - something like that) and rotate the heater back & forth... listening for the sound of a ball bearing rolling back & forth. If you don't hear any sound, you can try CAREFULLY knocking the switch housing with, say, a ball-peen hammer to loosen it up.

If this doesn't work, you will probably want to replace the switch. You can find them on Google, ranging from $2-6. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can easily replace it yourself. Otherwise, find a friend (or take it into a shop) for a very quick & easy fix. Don't forget to epoxy the housing of the switch to the heater, so it doesn't rattle around!

Diagnosing a short cycling honeywell HZ-510 heater

There is no "official" way to fix this problem, but I did find a solution. You have to open the case by removing the 6 security screws on the bottom, and pull the height and thermostat knob off (they just pull off easily). You will see on the underside of the thermostat switch, a dangling weight (the tilt sensor). It is attached to 3 sandwiched metal arms. The very bottom arm is designed to bend upward when it gets hot, and it lifts the contacts apart. If you bend that bottom arm downward just a little (don't go too far, or you'll lose the thermostat feature altogether) it will allow the arm to heat up to a more reasonable temperature before shutting the heat off. Just reassemble, and it should work!
