Over the weekend, the machine began making a HORRIBLE noise during the spin cycle. It sounded as if the gears were grinding and it was getting ready to lift off. Later, the sound was heard throughout the entire cycle. My husband tried a few minor repairs--some WD40 quieted the grinding--but after two loads it was obvious the spin cycle wasn't emptying. Our load was still very wet at the conclusion of the cycle.

If you're hearing gears grind, you're looking gearcase (transmission) issues!!! How old is this unit? A new gearcase...you're looking well over $300!!!

I see that you are hearing a grinding noise before the spin cycle in your Frigidaire washer, model# GLET1031CS0. A certain amount of "grinding" or gear sounds are normal in a heavy-duty washer. If you notice that the grinding sound appears to be getting louder, I suggest contacting either the manufacturer or your local authorized technician for further assistance. Hope this is helpful.
It sounds like the drain pump needs replacing, its bearings have failed or there is something from the wash jammed in it. But before you buy a new one, get the machine checked by an expert in case lots of parts are damaged.
I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.
Sound very much like something (coin etc) is stuck in the pump, have had a look online to see if I can find a diagram to check if there is a customer access filter for you to check. Unfortunately, I can't find one so if you have your owners manual see if there is any info. This will also be the answer to the spin problem as most w/m will not spin until all water has been expelled. Hope this helps.
Hello, could be a possible bad pump. I would lean the washer back so you can see the belt. take the belt off and spin all of the pulleys. the pump pulley has a s leave that sometimes makes a grinding noise.
Hope that helps! Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.
