Question about HP Compaq ProLiant DL380 Server

HP Dl380 and Dell MD1000 storage unit bought

HP Dl380 server and Dell MD1000 storage unit bought before I was hired. Installed HP E500 Smart Array controller in server & connected MD1000. HP's ACU software sees and allows config of arrays & logical drives, and they are available in Server 2008, but ACU sees drives in bay 0 TWICE. Half of MD1000 drives flash amber; other half flash green. Quite a headache... thx, Sarah

...Try mirroring - just to test? There are physically 15 drives in the MD1000, yet the ACU shows 22... ?!!!

I can't see how mirroring will pinpoint a solution...

    Thanks for responding,

    Sarah

For anyone who happens to be in the same situation: The card to use for an MD1000 is a Dell Perc5e. The controller cards from HP and Dell have specific drivers, which are proprietary. Neither Dell nor HP can say their card will NOT work with each other's servers or storage devices. They also can not provide proper solutions, because they are trained on their own proprietary hardware. There is also the warranty to consider - will the hardware be supported if it is not in a supported configuration?

The advice I've gotten from Dell & HP is: put a Dell server and Perc5e with a Dell Md1000.

HP DL380, drive 1 and 2 lights are not on, but 3 is. Can I swap new drives in those spots and it write automaticaly. Or is there and easy fix, I checked cables and connections, reset hardrives and powered...

Boot from HP Diagnostic Media (SmartStart CD)and check the status of Array.....or harddrives...
If showing any failed status or not supported..
Replace drives to check if new drives show status...
It could be because of Drives not intialise for Array..

Boot to Array Configuration Utility...during bootup and go to Intialise disks....
Use them

Drive array problem

Hi Nick ,

As of now you can Select "F2" to accept data loss and re-enable logical drive. This Load OS Normally .
It seems that one of the HDD in the RAID 5 has failed , Did you notice any LED indications like red or amber on the HDDs ?? if so get that hdd replaced . Make sure the Failed HDD is replaced .
You can run the Array Diagnostic Utility from HP System tools to check the Failed Drives and also frimware version of the controller . If the frimware is not latest Update it from HP website. DL380 G4 should have Smart Array 6i controller .

Hope This was Helpful
cheers :)

I can´t use a serial ata disk in a proliant 350

I know ATA disks are cheaper , but they don't last as long or are less reliable.

I do not recommend mixing SCSI and ATA .

Use one or the other , not both.

Do not try , unless your server is non critical.
If it is non critical , why bother with server , a PC will do as well.

Thanks
David
