Piercing, loud alarm when starting Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop

I have had a Dell Inspiron 4100 for about 8 years now and it has worked just great. However, I am having a problem now. When I turn it on, there is a very loud and piercing alarm and the only way to turn it off is to unplug the computer and take out the battery. Any idea what may be going on?

Thanks for responding. Was away for a few days.

Strangely the laptop boots up just fine. After it finishes loading Windows XP and I see my desktop, the piercing alarm starts immediately, but the system continues loading normally. Do you suspect something is wrong with the hard drive? Any clues would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you might have fan failure (Bearing seized) but we need more information. So the system operate normally other than the noise, or is it locked up?

If you remove the hard drive, does the noise still occur when you start the system?

Most likely, the CPU cooling fan, as the system doesn't really start generating any heat until the windows video initializes. If you have the resource CD, run the diagnostic for the fan, see if the noise occurs during the test.

Dell Inspiron 4100 flickering off and on Makes it extremily hard to work with . How can I tell whether it is the display or something else?

What happens when you hook it up to a external monitor? If it works fine with a external monitor, then your laptop monitor is going bad. If it does it with an external monitor, then its more than likely an issue with your laptops video adapter.

Multiple vertical screens at startup (dell inspiron 4100)

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop (15 pin VGA connector). If the display appears normal on the external monitor then you have an issue with your laptop's LCD display. If the external monitor also has vertical screens then your video circuit on the laptop has a problem.

How do i make the speakers on my dell inspiron 4100 work?

Very general question, but check the soundcard (are drivers installed), codecs for the files you are trying to play. Or look for Fn+F1toF12 combo, which may mute/unmute.

Not enough video memory

The Inspiron 4100 has a 16MB video card built in to the motherboard. It is not upgradable. It appears that the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the program, so you'll have to get a more powerful system to run that application. sorry =(

You can also pick up the batteries less expensive than most computer places at batteries plus. And yes it sounds as though it is the batteries charge is getting low, especially if it runs fine when the battery is out and you have it plugged in.
