I reformatted my laptop, after that I reinstall the windows XP, after the installation I can no longer use the internet because there is a required laptop motherboard driver CD to install the video card, sound card and LAN, the CD is lost but I'm still finding a difficulty in finding a universal laptop driver.

If you have access to a computer that gets on the internet...obvious, since you posted this.....go to the dell support website and download the xp drivers for the Inspiron 6400 onto a flash drive, then plug that into your laptop, the drivers are self installers....just double click on each file and follow the prompts, and click on yes when it asks. Below is the link. When you go to support, navigate to drivers/ software....put in the model number of your laptop, in this case it is laptop....Inspiron.....6400. Make sure the operating system listed is XP and start downloading files. If you are unsure which driver to get for a specified piece of equipment, just download them all and when you go to install, the laptop will tell you whether that piece of equipment is in the laptop or not.
The link below should take you straight to the right page.

Dell has a website where you can download all necessary drivers for your specific machine. You will need to type in your service tag number, you will find it on a tag on the bottom of the machine. Here is the URL:

Windows xp startup problem

You may need to "wipe" or reformat your entire C drive to be able to install Windows program again. I would suggest installing WIN7 program as WIN XP is at its end of life cycle for that operating system and Microsoft may not support it any longer.

If possible try installing WIN7 once again, and if requested to reformat or do an entire install, choose YES.

WIN 7 should then reformat your C drive, erase everything that is on it and then install as WIN7 program.

Be sure you have your program license key to install WIN7.

I have install windows7 but now i want to install windows xp what is process of installing windows xp

there are two ways to do it. the easy way and the hard way:

  • easy way is longer, you simply back-up your files, then reformat your PC and reinstall XP
  • the hard way is more technical, but does not require reformatting. please see link below for the set-by-step guide

I have a laptop with window 7, i try to reformat it but it can't is there any solution to change my o.s window 7 to xp...

You cannot perform an automatic downgrade (e.g. via an Upgrade function) from W7 to XP: you will need to perform a full XP installation on top of W7 from a self booting XP Installation CD.
By doing a FULL XP installation, you will loose all settings and all Applications software and drivers will need to be re-installed ... not for the faint hearted!!! The install will give you the option to reformat the drive ... but i do not recommend it !!!
I strongly suggest that you backup your existing W7 system to allow you to re-copied certains files (e.g. Document folders). Also separately backups your Internet (IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc) settings/favorites so that you can restore them under XP.
Make sure that you have all the required XP drivers for your specific Laptop available on your hard disk.
Hope it helps and good luck!

I want to reformay my Dell Latitude D505 laptop. I have the reinstall disc with system software, device drivers, diagnostics and utilities as well as the windows XP Disc. Is this all I need ?

HI there,

It looks like you're good to go except you should, during rebuilding your system, go to the Dell Support Drivers & Downloads site (which they recommend), enter the service tag# for your laptop, and download and install most of your drivers from there as they will be the most recent.

Since you're using XP, you'll want to start with the XP disc and reformat and install XP first, then use your Dell Dsic that has drivers on it to install the LAN and WLAN (wired and wireless internet connection) drivers to get on the net and go to the Dell site.

I usually make a folder on the desktop and name it Drivers, then while at the Dell site dowload each driver, BIOS update, application, etc. to that folder so I can work directly from the driver files without constantly reconnecting to the Dell site every time I have to restart after a driver install that requires it.

Good Luck

Internet connection problem

If you reinstall windows using System Recovery Disk then you do not need to worry about anything, it will
bring your computer back to the factory settings. However, if you use Windows DVD to reinstall the system then you need to install all the drivers manually.
If your drivers are missing then download it form your manufacturers website.

If you are using win XP

How can I reformat my A20m IBM Thinkpad..

Doing a Format on your PC Should Be A Last Resort! Reformatting your Windows computer is usually the absolute last resort and is often done unnecessarily. Before you go through the process of doing a reformat of your hard drive please take a few moments to read through the rest of our website. If you are reformatting to fix problems with your Windows computer it's possible that by using some of the tips on our site, or by downloading or purchasing some of the tools or products that we link to, you might be able to avoid the need to reformat your computer. Because doing a complete reformat of your computer will erase the contents of the hard drive and require you to reinstall all software, reformatting is usually a last resort. Some Computer Manufacturers Make Reformatting Easy Many name-brand PC manufacturers include a restore-disk which makes it easy to reformat your PC and return it to the state it was in on the day you purchased it. Some manufactures supply only a standard Microsoft Windows CD, and some (usually lower-end PC manufacturers) supply neither! If your PC did not come with a restore or reformatting CD, then you will need to take extra steps to format your hard drive and get Windows re-installed. Back Up Your Files Before You Reformat your Windows PC!Because the reformat or restore process erases everything on your computer, it is critical to have a backup of any important files on your computer. You will also need your original software install disks to reinstall any software you have purchased.

Things to do before you reformat your PC hard drive
  • Write down or print out all notes and internet pages because once the format process begins, you will no longer have access to them (or anything else in the PC)
  • As already stated, BACKUP all important files and data! When you reformat your computer everything will be erased!
  • Make sure you have all the CDs and other software. All programs will have to be reinstalled after you format the hard drive. Don't forget about software that came with hardware such as printers, scanners, etc.
  • Write down the brand and information for all the hardware on your computer. Look in the Device Manager and make note of the brand and model of network adaptors, video cards, sound cards, printers, modems, and displays. After reformatting you might need this information to reinstall drivers.

How to install XP in toshiba Satellite L45-S7423 laptop

You cannot uninstall Windows Vista, but you can reinstall your previous operating system, which then replaces Windows Vista. To reinstall your old operating system, you must have the original installation disc. Back up your programs and files, insert the installation disc into your computer, and then reinstall the old operating system. To regain the hard disk space used by Windows Vista, reformat the disk during the reinstallation process. After reinstalling your previous operating system, reinstall your programs and files.
