Does the repair & cost recommendation solve our problem?

Our 65" Hitachi Ultra Vision Projection set (4yrs. old) has a blue wave in the upper left hand corner. The picture also changes from color to blk & wht & back again. The tech recommends a replacement of the conversion generator & possibly 2 resistors in the blue circuit, after trying to adjust the grides for an hour.( $700+ is the quote). Yikes- to repair or to replace after only 4yrs, are parts that expensive or that marked-up?

Thanks for trying..unfortunately, the tech is saying he is unable to adjust the blue color or blue color grid in our set.

He wants to order & states we need a conversion generator & possibly 2 resistors &/or diodes replaced on the circuit board.

I know resistors &/or diodes are small components & are usually inexpensive, but a conversion generator???

You have described a typical convergence problem. It takes skills in unsoldering and soldering to get it fixed. There are two convergence IC's that need to be changed and possibly a resistor if open. You have to determine if the picture before it went out looks good enough to spend money on. Typically the parts, technical charge and service call will cost you on average of about $300. However, since the set is already 10 years old I would venture to say that the tubes are getting weak and does not have much life left in them. I would recommend upgrading to an LCD or LED television for just a few dollars more. If you take on the project yourself, I must tell you that you need to be proficient in electronic soldering and unsoldering. The IC's are mounted side by side on a metal heat sink and are about 2 inches by about 4 inches and are soldered in with 18 pins each. Use desoldering braid to remove and when solder the new ones be careful not to bridge the pins with solder. Also when unsoldering care must be taken not to break the printed circuit. And look for a burned resistor which is a cylinder shaped object with metal wires out both ends and going into the board. You can identify the value of the burned resistors by comparing the ones that are similar in the circuit and are not burned. Usually there are two side by side

I get a split up of red and green in a wave at top of screen

The convergence ICs and resistors are the most likely things to cause that. You can get the convergence repair kit for the DP14G hitachi( 53UXX10B) at the following link which contains the parts and instructions.

Blue Yellow Wave

I believe what you have is a convergence problem and it is usually caused by two Integrated Circuits going bad which also opens up one or two resistors associated with them. Replacing the Convergence Ic'S - (Ik04 & Ik05) and Resistor Rk62 a 1.8 Ohm .5w. Metal Film type should take care of the problem. As far as costs involved, I would guess about $350-$425 to get repaired. With it only being about 4 years old, it should have that many more years left of good use for you.
