Iriver h10 (5gig) not playing music (firmware 2.53)
Has anybody else had this problem before? I've been searching around and I've only seen 1 other person with a problem similar to this one:
I have an iriver 5 gig mp3 player that will do everything fine, appart from play any music. What i mean is that it can transfer music, sync with stuff, play fm radio (so there is no volume problem or anything else so simple), ect.
What happens is that when you try to playback ANYTHING (IE mp3 any bitrate, wma, wav) it opens the file, reads the id3 tag, but shows the track length as 0:00 and doesn't try to progress. Also, when pausing it then displays the correct track length but doesn't do anything when you go to play it agian.
When it's trying to play something, you can still go back, change volume, change eq, in fact anything you could normally do.
Can't be a licence issue as no such warning is given (have seen a licence error on an iriver, not this one). Also tried it with those sample mp3s micro$oft provide that should be pretty much licence correct.
I got the player with the latest firmware version 2.53. Using that irvierplus thing I flashed the firmware to version 2.53 again.
So I've tried:
- Newest firmware
- Rebooting (removing battery for a few seconds)
- Reformatted
- Leaving it to try and see if it will eventually play it
- Tried all the buttons
- Checked the system settings
Has anybody had this problem as well? Anybody got any ideas?

Making transfers to the device can be done in either UMS or Manager mode.
UMS firmware matches with seeing the player as a removable disk in Windows Explorer and is also used for updating firmware, using iRiver PLUS software.
Manager firmware matches with iRiver Music Manager software.
When needing the Music Manager go to next site and enter the word
manager in the second column next to GO: http://www.iriver.com/flash/index.asp?code=0302 iriver music manager ( Ver. 3.21 ) shows up: click the item and read
the instructions for download and installation.
I got this from another post: 1) plugged in H10 to pc that didn't have any iriver software on it a) I've read if you press the "o" button on the iRiver H10 when connecting it will just connect as a usb mass storage device 2) the H10 now appears as a mass storage device 3) right click on the drive, and select format ( I choose quick format) 4) install the iRiverFirmware updater from http://iriveramerica.com/support/mtpupdate/ 5) when you run the updater, it found the H10, then asked if the device was from USA or Europe, mine was from Europe 6) It stated that the iRiver firmware was v0.0, and would install v2.51 (I've seen v2.53 available on the european iriver website but could not download it). 7) proceed with installing the updated firmware 8) on the last screen it says, unplug to complete firmware update - NOTE press Finish first before unplugging 9) switching on the iRiver it 'rebooted' a few times and then when the menu appeared, I connected to the pc and just dropped some mp3 files into the music directory and all was okay.
I fixed this problem for my mate, here's what I did:
1) plugged in H10 to pc that didn't have any iriver software on it a) I've read if you press the "o" button on the iRiver H10 when connecting it will just connect as a usb mass storage device 2) the H10 now appears as a mass storage device 3) right click on the drive, and select format ( I choose quick format) 4) install the iRiverFirmware updater from http://iriveramerica.com/support/mtpupdate/ 5) when you run the updater, it found the H10, then asked if the device was from USA or Europe, mine was from Europe 6) It stated that the iRiver firmware was v0.0, and would install v2.51 (I've seen v2.53 available on the european iriver website but could not download it).
These are the steps that helped me resolve a similar issue I had:
1) Find a computer with Windows XP (ServicePack2)
2) Intall iRiver Music Manager 3.16 from http://iriverinc.com/download/iRiver_Manager_v316sp.exe
3) Download the Firmware update for your player from http://iriverinc.com/download/ifp800/IFP-8XXT.HEX to your Desktop
4) Start the Music Manager and connect your player to the computer. (The XP should recognize your player; and the Music Manager should show the "connected" status)
5) In the Music Manager, click on Tools => Upgrade Firmware, then select the file from your Desktop. NOTE: The upgrade process takes 4 -5 minutes.
After the firmware update, Windows Vista and other PC's should recognize your player.
This is straight out of p. 67 of the user's manaul, available on iRiver website (it may not work if the computer does not recognize the device):

Same problem on a 2GB x20 I just bought. Easy to get things into the device, but nothing recognized as playlist either using iriver plus3 or Media Player.
Bronte,
When you change your firmware from the "manager" version to e.g. the Firmware v1.85 UMS version, you will no longer need to use the iriver manager software to move mp3's around, you can just drop them on or from your iriver. The disadvantages are that:
1. by upgrading to the UMS version, you will wipe ALL your current music, so it will NOT help you right now, only after you have upgraded to the UMS version and placed mp3's on there again. The iriver will behave like an external thumb-drive, so you can use it on any PC without the iriver manager.
2. The UMS firmware will ONLY run in USB 1.0 speeds, so it will take up to 36 minutes to fill the iriver up with 1 GB of music (or in my case podcasts).

Robert Ilbrink
I remember reading somewhere that if you upgrade your firmware of your H340 from US to international to get video you lose the ability to play DRM music. I from this I would that the international version can't play the copy protected files.
I am not sure of the legalities in your location, but you may be able to work around the copy protection. Maybe a google search would give you some hints.
Ah OK, I'll give firmware 2.51 a shot. I'll post back when I've done it.
