The symptoms are usually telling you that there is a lens problem. In some case a firmware problem can give the same.
If problem is firmware, the manufacturer will be aware, and there will be an update available.

First contact Emerson to check if a firmware upgrade is available, and follow their instructions to load the update.
Your manufacturer contact is listed on the manual.

If that does not work, it means that there is a lens problem, in that case refer to the instructions below:

I've gone through two of these machines in less than a year. They exhanged the first one because it stopped loading after a few weeks...the second one stopped loading dvd's after about 6 months. Now I'm out the money. Sounds like they must know this is a defect.

It is most likely a permanent fault as CDs and DVDs require the laser to focus differently. If the unit is a few years old it will not be viable for economic repair.

have you tried a lens cleaner? the lens may have gone bad and would need to be replaced. Do you have warranty on the player?

My cd drive on my compaq desktop plays cd's fine but will not play dvd's.what can i do it's a windows xp home

You can only play CDs on a CD drive. In order to play DVDs you need a DVD drive. A DVD drive can play both CDs & DVDs.

I have a Toshiba A305-S6829 laptop. At first, I used to be able to play and burn CD's and DVDs without any hassel. However, recently, i discovered that i can only play and burn DVDs. My CDs will not play...

u have to download the firmware update for the drive. It will work fine.

After playing a cd in unit will no longer read DVDs

Had the same symptom. The unit would play CDs but not DVDs. The DVD laser was at fault. Purchased and replaced laser unit KHM-313AHC (ebay- $20) and it now works fine.

Plays cds but not dvds

If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.

How to or can't boot from a CD or DVD. If the computer is loading to an error message when attempting to boot to ... Not all CDs and DVDs are bootable; in order to boot from a CD .
