Compressor on Kenmore freezer tries to start but overload kicks

The compressor on our 6 1/2 yr old 24.9 cu ft Kenmore freezer tries to start but the overload kicks out in about 4-5 seconds. It sounds like the compressor is locked up. Is the compressor bad or could it be the run capacitor that is bad.

Hi,

Do you Hear anything when you ON the Freezer like Clicking Noise or Humming Noise. If NO, follow the Below steps :-

Check to see if the thermostat has continuity when turned to the coldest setting, if that is okay then you will want to disconnect the wires going to the compressor and see if you get 120 volts there after is plugged in, if you get that I would replace the overload / relay on the compressor and see if that gets it to work, if that does not work your compressor is shot and not worth fixing.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Replaced run cap, motor windings ohm out good, condenser fans work. when i power up unit the compressor overload trips after 5-6 seconds

Probably locked rotor. This happens sumetims when the connecting rod breaks or seizes up on the crank shaft. Seperate your power cord ar some point so that you can put an amp meter around just one of the hot wires. It should be 10.2 amps maximum. I think you will see it spike to 25 amps for 2 to 3 seconds when the compressor tries to start. That almost immediately kicks out the overload. This compressor is not rebuildable. so it will require a new one if it is what I think.

Light inside on thermostat not working

If the compressor is not working and the unit has a electronic control board try and replace it.the other thing to check is the over load relay and the start ptc on the compressor. make sure there is power to the compressor. If it is still under warranty set it up for service and it will not cost you any money. you can put a 5 to 10 pound block of dry ice in the cabinet to keep things cold for about 24 hours until you get it running

Compressor kicking on and off now not anything

Make sure you have 120volts at relay if not jump out thermostat if it starts to run and stays running Replace the thermostat. If you have 120volts at relay and it is not running or it's kicking off and on replace Start Relay/Overload but a bad compressor can make a Start Relay go bad so if you have the same Prob. after replacing Start Relay/Overload Compressor is bad

My kelvinator upright freezer stopped freezing and it just kicks on and kicks right back of what could be wrong with it?

Start Relay/Overload or Compressor is bad. A bad compressor can make a Start Relay/Overload go bad but the only way to find out if compressor or Start Relay/Overload is bad is to replace the Start Relay/Overload if it starts and stays running you fixed it if Prob. returns in a week or so or if you have the same Prob. after replacing the relay the compressor is bad.

Start up current draw

Lock motor Amps ( LMA ) is the current draw when the compressor starts. This draw of current is less then 1sec.The amp amount shoud be on the compressor Name Plate. This amp draw is also the amps used when the compressor goes bad and locks up then the overload kicks out.

Red light blinking with audible alarm. Compressor

That is the compressor starting relay trying to start the cooling cycle and the overload protector kicking off. You can try installing a new start device for about $50.00 but you are most likely looking at a compressor replacement which runs about $400.00

Sorry for the bad news

I have a freezer chest the compressor comes on but it never cools

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.

HI I HAVE AN OLD 13 CU. FT KENMORE UPRIGHT FREEZER. AFTER I DEFROSTED IT YESTERDAY AND AFTER IT HAD BEEN PLUGGED IN FOR ABOUT 6 HRS I NOTICED THAT THE SIDES OF THE FREEZER FELT VERY HOT . IS THIS NORMAL ?...

It had to run longer than normal to cool down the freezer again. The heat from the compressor running is what you feel.

I would not worry about it unless it is still hot after 24 hours. Then there is another problem.

My fridge freezer defrosted n now wont wrk

what you are hearing is the overload kicking in and out. which means bad start relay /bad capacitor/low voltage/bad overload/bad compressor.you can buy a 3in1 to eliminate all but the compressor. and the voltage check them first.

15 cu. ft. chest freezer

Remove the back panel, if there is one, find the compressor. Put your hand on it. If its very hot, you have a problem. You should feel a slight vibration if good and running. If The overload is shutting off keep your hand there and wait a few minutes, see if there is a clicking noise coming from the compressor. This is just a start, but you said it has been off for a while so my first suspect is a compressor. Do these things and let me know for a follow up.
