I have a hp pavillion laptop with the philips dvd drive in it, device manager detects the dvd reader and says it is running with no problems. i can hear the drive read the cd when inserted, tho when trying to access the drive through my computer the window hangs at the hourglass for a min or so, then says please insert a cd.

Just try to reinstall the DVD driver software through the Add Hardware wizard at the control panel. From the Start menu, left click the Control Panel, and the Add Hardware. Right to left click to open. Just follow the instructions and let your PC do the rest. If you have an internet, connect your PC without opening any window. Your PC will autoconnect and search the internet for the proper software driver. Wait for a few minutes, until it is installed. Hope this Help.
Likely a bad DVD drive. Have you tried playing a music cd or reading a non-dvd disc? Might try cleaning the laser.Likely a bad DVD drive. Have you tried playing a music cd or reading a non-dvd disc? Might try cleaning the laser.

hmn.. i would try it on another computer before tossing it out... i would also try to start up the pc with a cd on it and trying to boot from it just to see if windows is the cause of the problem. if it boots from the cd the it works.
You will want to check in Device Manager to see if the device is even detected by the computer. Right Click My Computer, Properties, Click Hardware Tab and Device Manager. If it isn't recognizing the DVD drive then it is most likely bad.
Go to control panel /system / hardware tab , then click on device manager then find your dvd/cd drive right click on that and select properties. there should be several tabs the one you want will be named dvd region or something like that.
some drives will only let you change the region a couple of times
You first remove that device from device manager. Then restart the pc. You may check the BIOS menu for that device for any clarification. After restart since u have removed it the OS will detect the device and install it automatically. Hope this helped.
I'm guessing you may have locked the DVD region. If you right-click on the device in Device Manager and click the Region tab, does it say 0 changes available? Acer won't fix this, and claim you have to replace the drive. Can't find a firmware flash for this drive online, will post back here if successful!
Hi,
Download the latest driver from Acer site or phillips site.
Uninstall the device driver.
Reboot
Windows should detect new hardware and start the wizard. Point to your drver installation file and install the driver.
Reboot. this should fix the problem.
alright. bubul78, your post is in no way shape or form a solution for the problems given by other users. I too have a acer laptop with the philips dvd drive in it, device manager detects the dvd reader and says it is running with no problems. i can hear the drive read the cd when inserted, tho when trying to access the drive through my computer the window hangs at the hourglass for a min or so, then says please insert a cd. only solution is that something is physically wrong with the drive. ok so solution found, replace the cd drive. but where is acers sight to order replacement parts? poor site navigation in my opinion.
