2nd time in less than a year this has happened....caught it early last time....this time not so lucky.....ruined wood floor in kitchen, leaked into basement, luckily into unfinished part.....obviously a problem but not getting any answers....refrigerator less than a year old

It looks like the problem is more wide-spread than just the filter in a refridgerator. I had a GE faucet water filter model GXFM03C. It worked fine for about 6 months and then cracks developed on the top of the filter housing. I used epoxy glue to seal it and it worked for another 6 months, but then it cracked again. This time the crack was too big to fix. I have seen other people had the same experience with their water faucet filter according to their reviews on Amazon.com.

Same here. Water flooded into Living and Dining room. Thousands of $$ of damage. It cracked near the end connected to the fridge. Now we are so paranoid, we turn the water to the fridge off when we are gone.

I have the exact same problem. Two filters have cracked in less than a year. My kitchen floor has flooded twice. The filter model is GE SmartWater MSWF. Is there another brand that's compatible with my refrigerator?

my water filter cracked and flooded my kitchen floor also. ??????

  • Anonymous Jul 22, 2008

I have had 2 in six months cracked. They always crack right at the top under the flange that holds it in place.

  • stevef67 Jul 30, 2008

Same with me. Filter cartridge MSWF. I'm lucky that both times we caught it fairly early (we were home! Woke up in the AM to find a huge mess). It is just a lot of work to clean it all up and take everything out of the fridge. We bought our fridge in February 2008, in May it happened. I ordered two more filters for $95. Two months later, in July, it happened again. I am super-pissed. I called GE and they said they are going to send a service tech out to "find out why this is happening". This is just a disaster and I hope they modify their filter design. It's no good. I will never trust this thing again. I guess we need to shut off the supply and make ice in ice cube trays to be safe.

I just had my second one crack this year! Both happend right at the top. Good thing we were home and heard the loud noise so water damage was minimal. This was an under sink filter holder GXSL03C.

My water filter cartridge in GE refrigerator keep cracking; flooding all over the kitche. Any suggestion?

  • Fixyanot Apr 08, 2009

We had our crack like and egg in the round area hanging down, not the area where the filter screws is place. 30K plus in damages. Surely the insurance company will go after GE to pay up.

The issue is with length of the filter and the space behind the filter allowing it to bend.

Along with many people we put a lot of things in our frig. When you jam things into your frig they can hit the filter causing it to bend towards the back of the frig. The long filter becomes a lever putting extra force on the plastic threads on the filter causing them to crack and leak.

Luckly we noticed our leak early and did not have a big leak into the floor below. But when I was removing items from the frig to get to the filter we had just bought two big gallons of milk and one was jammed into the filter.

You can try to remember to not put to much on that side, but within a month you will for get. Best thing to do until GE comes up with a better filter is to tape a wedge to the filter that fills the space between the filter and the back of the frig. That way if you jam a big gallon milk into the filter it will not bend and crack.

Had this same issue - the wedge is a good idea. What worked for me was a 3" PVC sprinkler pipe coupler around the bottom of the filter. Stuff hits it instead of the filter and the filter is fully protected. Stress gets transferred to the back of the fridge though the coupler. Cost: 80 cents.

Seems this is an ongoing issue, for sure. We just hours ago came home to a completely flooded kitchen, living room and finished basement. Insurance is still yet to determine the thousands of dollars in damage. The base of the filter was completely blown out the bottom.

My cuno filter cracked after many years. Cuno told me that the plastic deteriorates. If the filter is new, consider whether it was overtightened or had frozen which might have weaken the plastic. It could also be a manufacturing defect. File a complaint with the BBB and Federal Trade Commission

How do you change the water filter on Maytag MF12568AES?

Check top right inside of frig. Filer is inside the housing; open door turn filter counter-clockwise, the housing should allow you to lower filter to change it out. Place new filter, turn clockwise, push back into place and close door.

My house flooded this week causing damage to all flooring. What can cause water to suddenly come into the fridge? When water was turned back on there was water flowing under the fridge? Would a filter...

There are a number of things that would cause this, including the inlet valve and filter. However, a cracked filter is by far the most common cause. Remove the water filter and if it no longer leaks, the filter is bad. If it continues to leak, it is likely the filter housing that is the issue.

Keeps coming up with fault "F1"

Is that in one drawer or both?

Generally it means the flood switch under the drawer (inside the housing is activated). This means water is leaking from somewhere - foam in detergent, cracked or crinked hoses, door seal leak etc.

To fix, take the drawers out from housing and dry the flood switch located in the centre of the housing base. Need towels and hair dryer.

Make sure the power is turned off.

sometimes ice makers get iced up inside the fill mechanism and causes this to happen. Have you tried defrosting the freezer? This may take care of your problem.

Viking all refrigerator

I just started having the same problem with my 48" frig/ freezer Viking Designer series 2 years old- this has been a hot summer, we were not home much and the AC in the house was set higher 78 degrees so the frig I guess had to work a bit more - when I open the door to the frig water droplets acually run down the interior of the door and the box insde is always damp - I also have stress cracks in the interior shell of the frig - repairman is trying to get Viking to fix it- it has been a year now and it still is not fixed- the stress cracks were caused by improper insulation application to the inside of the frig according to the repair people- Also my handles have pealed - like the stainless steel is not really stainless steel - Any ways could the temp in the house changed - does not mean the frig should not work well - For what it costs, I expected better
