1. not all "blank" DVD-disks are rated the same (1X, 2X, 4X, 8X).
2. if the burner is not a SATA device, check that you have an 80-pin parallel-cable between the motherboard and the burner.
3. check that your burning-software has chosen the highest speed.
4. defragment your disk-drive.
5. ensure that you have enough "free" disk-space (4.7GB).
6. pause all anti-virus and anti-spyware scans -- they consume CPU-resources, and keep your disk-drive "busy".
7. disconnect from the Internet (to avoid Windows Update from running, and "stealing" CPU-resources away from your burning-task).
Most likely, you will need to reinstall the burning software.

Check the DMA settings on your DVD device, usually found under Device Manager->Properties. It sounds as though DMA is OFF, causing this extremely long burn time. You could also check your BIOS settings for the Hard drive(s) and DVD devices you have installed. Make sure that DMA is enabled for all of them. You'll see increased performance when enabled and set to ON.
Good luck!
I would recommend trying a firmware update on the drive. What type of computer do you have? For example, HP has specific updates for drives at http://www.hp.com Otherwise, go to samsung.com and go to drives/downloads and search for what is called a "firmware driver" (firmware is software on the drive that will help it to either work better, or confirm you have a defective DVD drive.)
