Question about Intel Motherboard

1 Answer

MS 6712 motherboard

Unable to boot XP - tried the main and spare back up HDD with XP installed.
At boot up displays "IDE 0 no 80 conductor installed"- bios still picks up the HDD type.
Tried HDD on IDE 1 same as above "IDE 1 no 80 conductor installed"- after bios the screen is out of sync displaying random data.
The system only has RAM, HDD, and AGP installed now for testing the fault.
Help - has the motherboard gone faulty, or what?

Thanks for you help -I have solved the problem:-

Tried one of the HDD on a spare pc and the screen was the same -random data on screen, so tried the spare HDD, same result, for some reason the 2 HDD's had been corrupted?? Reloaded XP on the main pc and pc is now ok - but at boot-up 'no 80 way ribbon cable connected to IDE-0' is displayed, -this I do not understand, but pc is ok - many thanks.

Check the cables, and if all connection pins are on the drives or on the motherboard. Not all the needed communication routs between the drives and the motherboard are working....
U can also try another IDE slot (if more than 1)
If all checks ok, try a BIOS reset... (but most probably is just the cables ...)

sounds like you merely have a bad HDD. just try to run scandisk under safe mode and for you to check the sectors of your drives.

Compaq presario 2594 us laptop , after boot-up get message ( operating system not found) tried recovery disc, will not formate hdd , will get this message in windows set-up , SET-UP...

I've gist had the same problem after flashing bios ...
go to BIOS and change the SATA mode to IDE. it worked for me.
original instructions:
also You have to turn OFF (disable) the boot from network. The error your seeing is result of the network boot rom not finding PXE server to boot from. Again, be sure to disable boot from network.
PLUS it seems if only 128 MB is showing as memory then the memory sticks might be damaged and not able to retain information/data to complete the installation process. Best take them out clean it properly & replace & try again. Nothing to do with BIOS!

Cmos settings will not stay set tried new battery, board looks good. athlon xp 1800+ cpu 1 gb ram. xp home, new brand name 300 amp power supply

If you can boot the machine into windows, change the date and time and go to MSI support website and download the latest BIOS update for that model motherboard and install it, that should resolve your problem.
If you need anymore help or advice please post back.

Hi john,
The issue what operating system are you running? Not your board).
Windows 98 can see a max of 64GB & windows 98SE, 137GB. Win XP can see a max of 2 exobytes.
(What is 1exobyte, EB. In decimal terms, an exabyte is a billion gigabytes).

Your 160BG drive is safe with XP.
