its sounds like its not booting from its harddrive,it may be trying to boot from a dvd or cd device.when it ask you to select pick your harddrive,or if you have two harddrives pick your main one with your windows on it.
Use a test utility like memtest86 to check it. Youll need another computer with a CDRW to create a test disk from an ISO.
Then boot the computer with the cd in and it should run from CD.
It may be a problem with the hard disk drive. To check, try to boot to the BIOS. Turn the computer on and tap on F10 before the Acer splash screen. Once you are in the BIOS, check if there is any hard disk drive being detected by the computer. Look for any SATA device that will have a storage capacity. If it does not show such, then you have to replace the hard disk drive of your computer. Unfortunately, the data goes together with this device. It will be very expensive to retrieve it from a damaged hard disk.
If in case the hard drive is seen, then it is just an OS problem. The MBR is corrupted. To fix this issue you need to boot from the installation CD.
For XP: boot to the WinRC.
Tap on F12 on before the splash screen. You will have an option to boot from the CD. Load the WinXP CD and choose onboard or usb cd rom drive.
On the setup screen choose R to repair. The follow the prompts until you get a black screen.
On this black screen, type fixmbr then press on return. That should do it.
If it does not work, then you just need to have your Hard disk replaced.
Is you new hard drive lager than you old on and was the disk drive a factory replacement cause with those disks if you even change just that they will not work
First question: What are the circumstances that led to this issue? Has the Acer Aspire ever read any disks in its cd drive? What happened before this occurred? What are the sounds/beeps you hear when the cd is inserted into the disk drive?
If you can go into the device manager (click on My Computer--Properties----Device Manager---go to the cd/dvdrom drive. What do you see? ex. if there is a red x, that mea your laptop is not recognizing the device...) Let me know when you have examined all the questions above, so I can help you solve this issue.
Do you have a floppy disk in the floppy drive? Remove it. Do you have a CD in the CD drive? Remove it and restart your notebook.
Put your ear on the left side of the track pad. Do you hear any clicking sounds? Do the same for the right side. Do you hear any clicking sounds? If you hear any clicking sounds, and it seems to be constant, you may have a failed hard disk drive.
Try these thing and let me know what happens. Binary Bob
