Kenmore and other Whirlpool manufactured dishwashers have a thermal fuse located inside the operator console. If the fuse blows it will exhibit the symptoms you describe. It cannot be reset and must be replaced. If you post back with your model number I can confirm how your dishwasher is configured and maybe provide you with a part number.
Your dishwasher does have the thermal fuse on the control board. The part number for the replacement kit is 8193762. I found it listed for the best price at appliancepartspros.com. You can also view an illustration of it there.
There were some noted problems with certain model dishwashers where the wire gauge on the thermal fuse was too small and would heat up causing the thermal fuse to blow prematurely. There is a replacement kit available that includes a wire harness with a larger gauge wire that you simply splice in place. It handles current better and prevents the fuse from blowing prematurely. To ease your mind, there were no reports of fire hazard.
If you type in your model number you can utilize the exploded view parts diagrams at appliancepartspros.com or searspartdirect.com to assist you in locating the part. The fuse is listed as item 6 under the "Control Panel Parts" section.
To replace the fuse, follow these steps:
1. Make sure the dishwasher is unplugged or the breaker is turned off.
2. Open the door and remove only the top screws directly behind the control panel.
3. Remove the protective cover from back of the control panel to expose the main control board.
The thermal fuse should be mounted to the control board. If you remove it and take a resistance check, it should read close to 0 ohms, if good. If bad, replace as necessary.
If you have any questions about this repair, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
