Kenwood KRC 535 - Faceplate stops halfway when turning off unit. When unit on it will play music, but nothing lights up so you don't know what you're listening to. Also cannot change station. ...

There is a fine ribbon cable that links both the main unit and the face plate. Due to the constant movement of opening and closing some of the conductive tracks develop cracks. That is the reason why when it closes half way it looses contact and the motor stops turning. The display illumination track must have completely broken.
You will need professional help to replace it because its a little complicated to access this ribbon cable. Will cost you about 15$ plus labor.

Kenwood KRC-x858 stuck halfway between closed and open

have the exact same problem. I called the Kenwood tech line and the tech reported that the ribbon cable2_bing.gif is probably broke. It is the flex cable between the head unit and the rotating face plate. He said it's not an expensive fix but we would need to mail it to a service center if you're like me and not near one. I just replaced mine with a new unit. It was about time anyways.

Kenwood KDC-715s problem.

the kenwoods with the motorized face platesdevelop one problem with time. the flexable ribbon cable between the main unit & the face plate. as the face open & closes, over time wares out the cable. problem consists of face plate not opening/closing, display missing & and/or some or all buttons not working. note these can also be intermittent problems. typically the part number is located on the cable itself on the side where it pluggs into the main board. since you have a service manual, you should verify it in the manual. good luck.
